Bitcoin’s latest market cycle is shaping up to be one of its most mature, with new Glassnode data showing a surge in institutional participation, calmer trading conditions and rapid growth in tokenized real-world assets.

Glassnode and Fasanara Capital, in their Q4 Digital Assets Report, say the structure of the market has shifted meaningfully as larger investors deepen their presence.

The report estimates that Bitcoin has absorbed about $732B in new capital this cycle, a level of inflow that has arrived alongside a sharp drop in volatility.

One-year realized volatility has nearly halved, suggesting a market that is growing both in size and in stability as institutional players take a larger role.

Bitcoin Settlement Hits $6.9T As Activity Rivals Visa And Mastercard

Settlement volumes remain a key sign of scale. Glassnode says Bitcoin settled roughly $6.9T over the past 90 days, placing it on par with or above payment giants Visa and Mastercard.

Even as more activity moves off-chain into ETFs and brokerage channels, Bitcoin and stablecoins continue to dominate value transfer on public ledgers.

Flows into ETFs have reshaped the way capital enters and exits the asset. The shift toward regulated wrappers is steering large volumes through traditional market rails, which has contributed to steadier liquidity conditions and reduced the frequency of large swings in spot trading.

Tokenized Funds Gain Momentum As Asset Managers Explore New Distribution Models

At the same time, tokenization has become one of the fastest-growing themes in digital assets.

Tokenized real-world assets have expanded from $7B to $24B in a single year, marking their strongest phase of institutional adoption. Glassnode notes that tokenized funds in particular are gaining traction as asset managers search for new distribution models and investors seek simpler access to traditional instruments.

The expansion of tokenized RWAs reflects broader interest from pension funds, hedge funds and corporates that want on-chain exposure without taking directional bets on major cryptocurrencies. This segment has been drawing consistent inflows through 2025 as platforms improve custody, compliance and settlement infrastructure.

Glassnode Sees A More Mature Market Defined By Stability And Scale

Glassnode adds that market structure is both larger, and calmer. Lower volatility, deeper liquidity and a growing share of institutional flows have reduced some of the extremes that defined earlier cycles.

The firm describes the market as trading “calmer, larger, and more institutional,” a theme echoed across derivatives, spot markets and on-chain data.

Despite the calmer backdrop, activity has not faded. Stablecoins continue to serve as the main bridge between traditional and digital markets, and settlement demand remains heavy across both centralized and decentralized venues. The report suggests this dual-rail structure is now a feature of the ecosystem rather than a temporary bridge.

Tokenized RWAs Accelerate Market Evolution And Broaden Investor Participation

ETF demand has also encouraged more market-making and arbitrage participation from traditional firms, which in turn has tightened spreads and reduced dislocations during selloffs. Glassnode says this feedback loop is contributing to a more resilient market than in prior cycles.

As 2025 progresses, analysts expect institutional involvement to deepen further, particularly as tokenized funds see broader adoption. Pilot projects by Société Générale, Santander, the European Investment Bank, and Germany’s Ministry of Finance demonstrate growing interest, though the market remains fragmented.

Cazenave emphasized that regulatory alignment is critical to ensure investor protections and prevent instability.

Currently, digital assets average 7% of institutional holdings, expected to rise to 16% within three years, driven by tokenized equities, fixed income, and digital cash, according to State Street research.

Challenges remain on the issuer side. Infrastructure for identity verification, compliance, and cap-table management lags behind front-end trading platforms, slowing onboarding, complicating reconciliation, and limiting secondary market liquidity.

Authorities worldwide are taking note. In November, the IMF highlighted tokenization’s potential to accelerate transactions and reduce costs, while cautioning that automated markets could amplify volatility and systemic risks.

Notably, in the UK, a “digital markets champion” and the Dematerialisation Market Action Taskforce are overseeing the issuance of digital gilts on distributed ledgers.

Data from RWA(.)xyz shows the distributed asset market currently represents $18.41 billion, with $391.55 billion in represented asset value across more than 555,000 asset holders.

Nasdaq digital assets chief Matt Savarese announced the exchange has made its tokenized-stock proposal a top priority and will “move as fast as we can” with the SEC to secure approval.

The proposal would allow trading of on-chain “stock tokens,” digital representations of publicly listed shares, under existing national market system rules.

Speaking in a CNBC interview, Savarese emphasized that Nasdaq isn’t trying to upend the existing system but aims to bring tokenization into the mainstream responsibly under SEC oversight.

“We’re not creating a new exotic instrument. The stock is the stock,” he said, stressing that investors would retain full rights and title as shareholders.

The exchange filed its rule change application in September, seeking to permit listed equities and exchange-traded products to trade in tokenized form while maintaining the same investor protections and execution standards as traditional securities.

Nasdaq Frames Tokenization as Evolution, Not Revolution

The exchange’s approach centers on maintaining the current market structure while adding blockchain-based settlement options.

The rules have existed for decades, and we don’t want to just completely rip out and upend the entire process,” Savarese explained, noting that trades would continue flowing through Nasdaq’s order book under SEC rules and national market system oversight.

Under the proposal, tokenized shares would carry the same rights as their underlying securities, including voting privileges and dividend rights.

It’s fully fungible between the token and its traditional form,” he said, explaining that clearing firms and the Depository Trust Company would process tokenized orders alongside conventional stocks under the same ticker symbols and CUSIP identifiers.

The executive stressed that Nasdaq positions itself as “the original innovator” in market infrastructure evolution, comparing tokenization to the exchange’s earlier shift from paper-based to electronic trading.

Post-Trade Efficiency and Collateral Mobility Drive Near-Term Benefits

Savarese outlined a phased timeline for tokenization benefits, with near-term gains focused on back-end processing improvements.

Tokenized settlement would create process efficiencies immediately, though the exchange plans to maintain seamless integration with existing member firm systems before pursuing faster settlement speeds.

Beyond settlement, enhanced collateral mobility emerged as a critical medium-term advantage.

Being able to take that equity, put it into a collateral pool, allow folks to be able to move that asset instantaneously can help along the lines of making sure that you have capital efficiency,” Savarese said, noting this would eliminate the need to overcollateralize positions.

Longer-term applications extend to corporate actions, proxy voting, and programmable smart contract functionality.

You start to get the programmable nature of what blockchain is and smart contracts are intended for,” he explained.

Nasdaq’s acquisition of Calypso through its Adenza deal provides the exchange with what Savarese called “the gold standard” in collateral management software, now integrated with blockchain rails to support tokenized asset movement.

Regulatory Path Forward Remains Central Focus

The exchange has entered the public comment period following its September filing, with responses closed by mid-October.

We’ll move as fast as we can with the SEC and make sure that we try to push this through,” Savarese said, expressing confidence that tokenization represents a priority topic for the current administration.

While declining to provide specific approval timelines given uncertainties, including recent government disruptions, the executive emphasized Nasdaq’s collaborative approach.

We’re not looking at kind of upending the system. We want everyone to come along with us for that ride and bring tokenization more into the mainstream, but we want to do it in that responsible investor-led way,” he said.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins has directed the agency to develop clear rules on digital asset classification.

At the same time, Commissioner Hester Peirce recently affirmed the regulator’s willingness to work with tokenization firms, provided they maintain full disclosure about asset characteristics.

Despite momentum, resistance persists from traditional financial institutions.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued one of its strongest warnings yet on the rapid rise of tokenized markets, arguing that the technology could reshape global finance in unpredictable ways.

But it cautioned that the same features driving efficiency could also introduce new forms of volatility, including flash-crash-style events triggered by automated, instant settlement.

However, speed brings risk. The IMF pointed to the 2010 flash crash that wiped out nearly $1 trillion in minutes, warning that tokenized markets, driven by smart contracts and automated execution, could amplify similar shocks.

Interconnected contracts, it said, may behave “like falling dominoes” during stress, turning localized disruptions into broader systemic events.

The IMF also warns of fragmentation if multiple tokenized platforms emerge without interoperability, weakening liquidity and limiting tokenization’s efficiencies.

The IMF argues that coordination and open systems are essential to prevent isolated ecosystems that cannot trade or settle with one another.

The institution also reminds that governments have never stepped aside during major shifts in the monetary system.

From the Bretton Woods restructuring in 1944 to the collapse of the gold standard three decades later, public institutions have repeatedly reshaped global finance when new models created new pressures.

“If history is any guide,” the IMF said, governments could take “a more active role” as tokenization expands.

The IMF’s reminder of these turning points suggests tokenization could be heading toward a similar era of deeper state involvement.

Governments are also becoming participants, with initiatives such as Singapore’s trials of tokenized government bills and wholesale CBDC transactions.

Europe, one of the fastest-growing hubs for tokenized fixed-income assets, has also raised concerns. ESMA Executive Director Natasha Cazenave recently said tokenization could transform the region’s markets, but only if investor protections, settlement rules, and legal frameworks evolve with it.

The Philippines could unlock a $60 billion tokenized-asset market by 2030, according to a new report from the Philippine Digital Asset Exchange (PDAX), Saison Capital, and Onigiri Capital.

Crypto Ownership in Philippines Outpaces Stock Investing

The report shows that while around 14% of Filipinos hold cryptocurrencies, fewer than 5% own stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, a gap between access to digital tools and exposure to the broader financial system.

“The Philippines has a unique advantage: blockchain wallets are already mainstream,” said Nichel Gaba, founder and CEO of PDAX.

“We’re not starting from scratch. The infrastructure to deliver tokenized assets to millions of Filipinos already exists in their pockets. Our focus now is to connect that infrastructure to real, regulated financial products.”

Project Bayani estimates equities will account for the largest share of the tokenized market at $26 billion, followed by $24 billion in government bonds, $6 billion in mutual funds, and $4 billion in other assets. Early examples already show how lower barriers can widen access.

Tokenized government bonds distributed through PDAX and payments app GCash reduced minimum investments to just P500, opening the market to smaller savers previously shut out by higher entry thresholds.

The initiative also points to the Bureau of the Treasury’s partnership with PDAX and GCash as evidence of growing momentum.

“This partnership brought government bonds directly to the fingertips of millions of Filipinos,” said Sharon Almanza, Treasurer of the Philippines.

“It represents a bold leap forward in democratizing access to public financial instruments, further promoting financial inclusion.”

Large consumer apps already serve as distribution channels, according to the report. Wallets such as GCash, PDAX, Maya, and Coins.ph allow users to hold digital assets without forcing companies or regulators to rebuild infrastructure from scratch.

Tokenized Real-World Assets May Unlock $400T TradFi Market

In a recent research, Web3 digital property firm Animoca Brands said that tokenization of RWAs could unlock a $400 trillion traditional finance market.

Animoca researchers Andrew Ho and Ming Ruan said the global market for private credit, treasury debt, commodities, stocks, alternative funds, and bonds represents a vast runway for growth.

“The estimated $400 trillion addressable TradFi market underscores the potential growth runway for RWA tokenization,” they wrote.

Meanwhile, according to the 2025 Skynet RWA Security Report, the market for tokenized RWAs could grow to $16 trillion by 2030.

Tokenized US Treasuries alone are projected to reach $4.2 billion this year, with short-term government bonds driving most of the activity.
