How to Blind Test Cannabis for an Elevated Experience

Cannabis can be tasted and appreciated like fine wine and the idea is gaining momentum nationwide. Over in the global ganja epicenter of California, encouraging people to blind test cannabis is nearly standardized.Β 

Local chef, entrepreneur and industry veteran Chip Moore, 36, is the founder of the 4 and 20 Blackbirds collective and has been treating its members to the blind tasting concept β€” wherein participants don’t learn strain names before sampling, followed by discussion about the key characteristics of tastes, smells and effects.

In the hippy hamlet of Fairfax north of San Francisco, the newly formed Herba Buena collective, whose co-founder Alicia Rose comes from the wine industry, incorporated blind wine-style tastings as well.Β 

Alicia said the β€œeffusiveness of the aromas” should guide aficionados through the tasting process. She’ll often make collective members smell a jar of Herba Buena’s ultra-organic cannabis before revealing the strain. β€œI like them to smell and experience the flower before identifying it,” she says.

It’s not a totally surprising development. TheΒ San Francisco ChronicleΒ mentioned treating cannabis like wine as far back as 2007 and magazine The Clever RootΒ β€” a farm-to-table foodie publication backed by the wine industry β€” has included an entire column devoted to cannabis. The magazineΒ Marijuana Business DailyΒ now publishes the results of blind taste tests in each issue.

As cannabis continues to be normalized and elevated through taste-testing events like these, industry leaders are wise to borrow from the wine and food culture, further illustrating how cannabis can offer as much of a connoisseur experience as wine or fine chocolate.

How to Conduct Your Own Blind Smell & Taste Test

1. When you blind test weed, make it blind. β€œThe main difference is that when someone knows the strain they are tasting they have already categorized how it’s supposed to smell and taste based on their previous experience with that strain,” said Moore.

2. Pick rare strains. Don’t choose popular favorites like Sour Diesel or OG Kush β€” aficionados can identify their signature lemonhead or pine-sol funk aromas in one whiff, and the results lead to sample bias.

3. Pre-roll some joints. Unlike wine, cannabis strains can be identified visually from across a room, rendering moot the whole point of the blind taste. β€œI want to challenge the participants to use their senses,” says Moore, β€œparticularly smell to reach past their preconceived notions and really get to know the bud they are smoking.”

4. Take a β€œdry hit.” Draw on an unlit joint to taste its terpenes at room temperature. A dry toke reveals a lot about the quality of the herb. It should have a clean herbal taste without any sharp salty notes which can indicate the presence of unflushed fertilizers.

5. Fire it up, but no bogarting. β€œI tell them to start off slow, not take one of those big, β€˜I’m not going to get this joint back’ hits,” laughs Moore.

6. Write down your notes. Privately record initial impressions and share joints to taste how the joint changes as it smokes. As leading cannabis judge Swami of Swami Select says, β€œEach joint is a journey and each tells its own story, how well it was flushed, whether it’s indoor or sungrown, this kind of things.”

7. Use coffee beans as a palette cleanser. Coffee beans help refresh noses over-exposed to the onslaught of cannabis terpenes and smoke.

8. No spoilers. As the joint burns, Moore asks folks to continue to record their observations, but don’t shout out what they think the strain is. It creates expectation bias.Β 

9. Don’t overdo it. Wine tasters spit out the wine. Smokers just need to go slow. β€œThe purpose is not to get so high they forgot what they’re doing,” says Moore with a chuckle.

10. Guess the strain. Write down your last impressions, along with any possible guesses as to what the strain is. Discuss.

11. Repeat. The best way to elevate your cannabis critiquing is to keep practicing.

Mango Kulfi: Stuffed Mango Icecream: Kulfi in a mango:Β Mango IcecreamΒ is basically rabri filled inside the mango. So, basically, the idea behind this unique version of kulfi is to have a different flavor in each bite. When you have the first bite of this ice cream, you feel the real taste of mango and when you take the second bite, you feel the fusion of kulfi and mango which will increase the level of taste.

Mango IcecreamΒ is one of the most common icecreams which our mothers used to make as the availability of this King of fruit is high during summers. There are a lot of variations in this icecream like some make it by adding cornflour, some make mango shake and then deep-freeze it to set but this kulfi in a mango version is a little different and much tastier as well.

I saw this type ofΒ Mango IcecreamΒ in the market in my hometown. A shopkeeper is cutting down pieces of mango, I curiously saw and strange that he had cut down the seed also and people are enjoying it. Then my mother told me the procedure. This incident happen when I was 10 years old.Β From that time I always want to make this. Now, during every Mango season, I prepared it about 5-6 times and narrates the story to my husband every time.

Let us discuss the recipe in detail: Firstly,Β Use full-fat milk then only it enhances the flavors of Rabri. While making Rabri, I add Bread Crumbs to have instant Rabri but you can skip it and follow the traditional method to make rabri.

Secondly,Β Use of flavors totally depends on you, whether you want to use cardamom powder, rose water, or kewra water. All three tastes are good. Along with flavors, these have a nice aroma as well.

Thirdly,Β Make sure to place the mango correctly in the freezer, it is better to put mango in a glass and then in a freezer. Also, once it sets properly, take it out 5-6 minutes before cutting.

Last but not least,Β this much icecream is sufficient for 2 persons. So, adjust the quantity as per the number of people. Some of the amazing mango desserts are listed below:

Step by step instructions

  • Take milk in a wok and bring it to boil on high flame.
  • Once it starts boiling, reduces the flame to medium. Scrap the sides. Reduce the milk to half.

  • Meanwhile, add green cardamoms to it. This will enhance the taste.

  • As the milk starts thickening, add sugar to it. Mix well.

  • Add chopped nuts. This step is optional. If adding, make sure to chop them finely.

  • Now, add bread crumbs to it. This will immediately give a thick texture to the milk.
  • When the milk reaches the desired thickness, turn off the flame. Allow it to cool down completely.

  • Take a mango, cut its top part. Keep it aside.

  • With the help of a knife, cut slowly from the sides of the seeds. We have to remove the seed without cutting the mango.

  • With thumb and first finger, remove the seed. It will be a little difficult for the first time.

  • Rabri cooled down completely.

  • Cover the mango with the top. Keep it in the freezer for 6 hours or till set.

  • After 6 hours, take the mango out from the freezer. Remove its peel.
