Scammers Are Exploiting the Holiday Shopping Season

Users should be particularly wary of holiday-themed scams over the next few weeks, according to researchers at Malwarebytes.

β€œMobile-first shopping has become second nature, and during the holidays, it’s faster and more frantic than ever,” Malwarebytes says. β€œFifty-five percent of people get a scam text message weekly, while 27% are targeted daily.

Scam USPS and E-Z Pass Texts and Websites

Google has filed a complaint in court that details the scam:

In a complaint filed Wednesday, the tech giant accused β€œa cybercriminal group in China” of selling β€œphishing for dummies” kits. The kits help unsavvy fraudsters easily β€œexecute a large-scale phishing campaign,” tricking hordes of unsuspecting people into β€œdisclosing sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, or banking information, often by impersonating well-known brands, government agencies, or even people the victim knows.”

These branded β€œLighthouse” kits offer two versions of software, depending on whether bad actors want to launch SMS and e-commerce scams. β€œMembers may subscribe to weekly, monthly, seasonal, annual, or permanent licenses,” Google alleged. Kits include β€œhundreds of templates for fake websites, domain set-up tools for those fake websites, and other features designed to dupe victims into believing they are entering sensitive information on a legitimate website.”...

Google claims win for everyone as text scammers lost their cloud server

The day after Google filed a lawsuit to end text scams primarily targeting Americans, the criminal network behind the phishing scams was β€œdisrupted,” a Google spokesperson told Ars.

According to messages that the β€œringleader” of the so-called β€œLighthouse enterprise” posted on his Telegram channel, the phishing gang’s cloud server was β€œblocked due to malicious complaints.”

β€œWe will restore it as soon as possible!” the leader posted on the channelβ€”which Google’s lawsuit noted helps over 2,500 members coordinate phishing attacks that have resulted in losses of β€œover a billion dollars.”
