In times of disruption, Agile leadership can help CIOs make better, faster decisions — and guide their teams to execute with speed and discipline.

When the first case of COVID hit my home city, it was only two weeks after I’d become president of The Persimmon Group. For more than a decade, I’d coached leaders, teams and PMOs to execute their strategy with speed and discipline.

But now — in a top job for the first time — I was reeling.

Every plan we had in motion — strategic goals, project schedules, hiring decisions — was suddenly irrelevant. Clients froze budgets. Team members scrambled to set up remote work for the first time, many while balancing small children and shared spaces.

Within days, we were facing a dozen high-stakes questions about our business, all with incomplete information. Each answer carried massive operational and cultural implications.

We couldn’t just make the right call. We had to make it fast. And often, we were choosing between a bunch of bad options.

From crisis to cadence

At first, we tried to lead the way we always had: gather the facts, debate the trade-offs and pick the best path forward. But in a landscape that changed daily, that rhythm broke down fast.

The information we needed didn’t exist yet. The more we waited for certainty — or gamed out endless hypotheticals — the slower and more reactive we became.

And then something clicked. What if the same principles that helped software teams move quickly and learn in real time could help lead us through uncertainty?

So we started experimenting.

We shortened our time horizons. Made smaller bets. Created fast feedback loops. We became almost uncomfortably transparent, involving the team directly in critical decisions that affected them and their work.

In the months that followed, those experiments became the backbone of how we led through uncertainty — and how we continue to lead today.

An operating system for change

What emerged wasn’t a formal framework. It was a set of small, deliberate habits that brought the same rhythm and focus to leadership that Agile brings to delivery.

Here’s what that looked like in practice:

Develop a ‘fast frame’ to focus decisions

In the first few months of the pandemic, our leadership meetings were a tangle of what-ifs. What if we lost 20% of planned revenue this year? What if we lost 40%? Would we do layoffs? Furloughs? Salary cuts? And when would we do them — preemptively or reactively?

We were so busy living in multiple possible futures that it was difficult to move forward with purpose. To break out of overthinking mode, we built a lightweight framework we now call our fast frame. It centered on five questions:

  1. What do we know for sure?
  2. What can we find out quickly?
  3. What is unknowable right now?
  4. What’s the risk of deciding today?
  5. What’s the risk of not deciding today?

The fast frame forced us to separate facts from conjecture. It also helped us to get our timing right. When did we need to move fast, even with imperfect information? When could we afford to slow down and get more data points?

The fast frame helped us slash decision latency by 20% to 30%.

It kept us moving when the urge was to stall and it gave us language to talk about uncertainty without letting it rule the room.

Build plans around small, fast experiments

After using our fast frame for a while, we realized something: Our decisions were too big.

In an environment changing by the day, Big Permanent Decisions were impractical — and a massive time sink. Every hour we spent debating a Big Permanent Decision was an hour we weren’t learning something important.

So we replaced them with For-Now Decisions — temporary postures designed to move us forward, fast, while we learned what was real.

Each For-Now Decision had four parts:

  1. The decision itself — the action we’d take based on what we knew at that moment.
  2. A trigger for when to revisit it — either time-based (two weeks from now) or event-based (if a client delays a project).
  3. A few learning targets — what we hoped to discover before the next checkpoint.
  4. An agility signal — how we communicated the decision to the team. We’d say, “This is our posture for now, but we may change course if X. We’ll need your help watching for Y as we learn more.”

By framing decisions this way, we removed the pressure to be right. The goal wasn’t to predict the future but to learn from it faster. By abandoning bad ideas early, we saved 300 to 400 hours a year.

Increase cadence and transparency of communication

In those early weeks, we learned that the only thing more dangerous than a bad decision was a silent one. When information moves slower than events, people fill the gaps with assumptions.

So we made communication faster — and flatter. Every morning, our 20-person team met virtually for a 20-minute standup. The format was simple but consistent:

  • Executive push. We shared what the leadership team was working on, what decisions had been made and what input we needed next.
  • Team pull. Anyone could ask questions, raise issues or surface what they were hearing from clients.
  • Needs and lessons. We ended with what people needed to stay productive and what we were learning that others could benefit from.

The goal wasn’t to broadcast information from the top — or make all our decisions democratically. It was to create a shared operating picture. The standup became a heartbeat for the company, keeping everyone synchronized as conditions changed.

Transparency replaced certainty. Even when we didn’t have all the answers, people knew how decisions were being made and what we were watching next. That openness built confidence faster than pretending we had it all figured out.

That transparency paid off.

While many small consulting firms folded in the first 18 months of the pandemic, Agile leadership helped us double revenue in 24 months.

We stayed fully staffed — no layoffs, no pay cuts beyond the executive team. And the small bets we made during the pandemic helped rapidly expand our client base across new industries and international geographies.

Develop precise language to keep the team aligned

As we increased the speed of communication, we discovered something else: agility requires precision. When everything is moving fast, even small misunderstandings can send people sprinting in different directions.

We started tightening our language. Instead of broad discussions about what needed to get done, we’d ask, “What part of this can we get done by Friday?” That forced us to think in smaller delivery windows, sustain momentum and get specific about what “done” looked like.

We also learned to clarify between two operating modes: planning versus doing. Before leaving a meeting where a direction was discussed, we’d confirm our status:

  • Phase 1 meant we were still exploring, shaping and validating and would need at least one more meeting before implementing anything.
  • Phase 2 meant we were ready to execute.

That small distinction saved us hours of confusion, especially in cross-functional work.

Precise language gave us speed. It eliminated assumptions and kept everyone on the same page about where we were in the process. The more we reduced ambiguity, the faster — and calmer — the team moved.

Protect momentum by insisting on rest

Agility isn’t about moving faster forever — it’s about knowing when to slow down. During the first months of the pandemic, that lesson was easy to forget. Everything felt urgent and everyone felt responsible.

In software, a core idea behind Agile sprints is maintaining a sustainable pace of work. A predictable, consistent level of effort that teams can plan around is far more effective than the heroics often needed in waterfall projects to hit a deadline.

Agile was designed to be human-centered, protecting the well-being and happiness of the team so that performance can remain optimal. We tried to lead the same way.

After the first few frenetic months, I capped my own workday at nine hours. That boundary forced me to get honest about what could actually be done in the time I had — and prioritize ruthlessly. It also set a tone for the team. We adjusted scopes, redistributed work and held one another accountable for disconnecting at day’s end.

The expectation wasn’t endless effort — it was sustainable effort. That discipline kept burnout low and creativity high, even during our most demanding seasons. The consistency of our rest became as important as the intensity of our work. It gave us a rhythm we could trust — one that protected our momentum long after the crisis passed.

Readiness is the new stability

Now that the pandemic has passed, disruption has simply changed shape — AI, market volatility, new business models and the constant redefinition of “normal.” What hasn’t changed is the need for leaders who can act with speed and discipline at the same time.

For CIOs, that tension is sharper than ever. Technology leaders are being asked to deliver transformation at pace — without burning out their people or breaking what already works. The pressures that once felt exceptional have become everyday leadership conditions.

But you don’t have to be a Scrum shop or launch an enterprise Agile transformation to lead with agility. Agility is a mindset, not a method. To put the mindset into practice, focus on:

  • Shorter planning horizons
  • Faster, smaller decisions
  • Radical transparency
  • Language that brings alignment and calm
  • Boundaries that protect the energy of the team

These are the foundations of sustainable speed.

We built those practices in crisis, but they’ve become our default operating system in calmer times. They remind me that agility isn’t a reaction to change — it’s a readiness for it. And in a world where change never stops, that readiness may be a leader’s most reliable source of stability.

AWS CEO Matt Garman thought Amazon needed a million developers — until AI changed his mind

LAS VEGAS — Matt Garman remembers sitting in an Amazon leadership meeting six or seven years ago, thinking about the future, when he identified what he considered a looming crisis.

Garman, who has since become the Amazon Web Services CEO, calculated that the company would eventually need to hire a million developers to deliver on its product roadmap. The demand was so great that he considered the shortage of software development engineers (SDEs) the company’s biggest constraint.

With the rise of AI, he no longer thinks that’s the case.

Speaking with Acquired podcast hosts Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal at the AWS re:Invent conference Thursday afternoon, Garman told the story in response to Gilbert’s closing question about what belief he held firmly in the past that he has since completely reversed.

“Before, we had way more ideas than we could possibly get to,” he said. Now, “because you can deliver things so fast, your constraint is going to be great ideas and great things that you want to go after. And I would never have guessed that 10 years ago.”

He was careful to point out that Amazon still needs great software engineers. But earlier in the conversation, he noted that massive technical projects that once required “dozens, if not hundreds” of people might now be delivered by teams of five or 10, thanks to AI and agents.

Garman was the closing speaker at the two-hour event with the hosts of the hit podcast, following conversations with Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters, J.P. Morgan Payments Global Co-Head Max Neukirchen, and Perplexity Co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas.

Generative AI, including Bedrock, represents a multi-billion dollar business for Amazon. Asked to quantify how much of AWS is now AI-related, Garman said it’s getting harder to say, as AI becomes embedded in everything. 

Speaking off-the-cuff, he told the Acquired hosts that Bedrock is a multi-billion dollar business. Amazon clarified later that he was referring to the revenue run rate for generative AI overall. That includes Bedrock, which is Amazon’s managed service that offers access to AI models for building apps and services. [This has been updated since publication.]

How AWS thinks about its product strategy. Garman described a multi-layered approach to explain where AWS builds and where it leaves room for partners. At the bottom are core building blocks like compute and storage. AWS will always be there, he said.

In the middle are databases, analytics engines, and AI models, where AWS offers its own products and services alongside partners. At the top are millions of applications, where AWS builds selectively and only when it believes it has differentiated expertise.

Amazon is “particularly bad” at copying competitors. Garman was surprisingly blunt about what Amazon doesn’t do well. “One of the things that Amazon is particularly bad at is being a fast follower,” he said. “When we try to copy someone, we’re just bad at it.” 

The better formula, he said, is to think from first principles about solving a customer problem, only when it believes it has differentiated expertise, not simply to copy existing products.

Thirty years ago today, Netscape Communications and Sun Microsystems issued a joint press release announcing JavaScript, an object scripting language designed for creating interactive web applications. The language emerged from a frantic 10-day sprint at pioneering browser company Netscape, where engineer Brendan Eich hacked together a working internal prototype during May 1995.

While the JavaScript language didn’t ship publicly until that September and didn’t reach a 1.0 release until March 1996, the descendants of Eich’s initial 10-day hack now run on approximately 98.9 percent of all websites with client-side code, making JavaScript the dominant programming language of the web. It’s wildly popular; beyond the browser, JavaScript powers server backends, mobile apps, desktop software, and even some embedded systems. According to several surveys, JavaScript consistently ranks among the most widely used programming languages in the world.

In crafting JavaScript, Netscape wanted a scripting language that could make webpages interactive, something lightweight that would appeal to web designers and non-professional programmers. Eich drew from several influences: The syntax looked like a trendy new programming language called Java to satisfy Netscape management, but its guts borrowed concepts from Scheme, a language Eich admired, and Self, which contributed JavaScript’s prototype-based object model.

3가지 에이전트는 모두 프리뷰 형태로 제공된다. 키로 에이전트는 팀원 모두가 공동으로 활용하는 에이전트로, 팀 차원의 코드베이스와 제품, 개발 표준에 대한 일관된 이해를 형성하는 데 기여한다. 또한 저장소와 파이프라인, 지라(Jira) 및 깃허브(GitHub) 같은 도구에 연결해 작업 진행 과정의 맥락을 지속적으로 유지한다. 키로는 이전까지 에이전틱 AI 개발환경(IDE)으로 소개된 바 있다. AWS 시큐리티 에이전트는 AWS뿐 아니라 멀티클라우드와 하이브리드 환경 전반에서 초기 단계부터 보안을 내재화한 애플리케이션을 구축하도록 지원한다. AWS 데브옵스 에이전트의 경우, 장애 발생 시 즉각 대응하는 ‘온콜’ 역할을 하며, 애플리케이션의 동작 방식과 구성 요소 간 관계에 대한 이해를 기반으로 서비스 중단의 근본 원인을 찾아낸다.

AWS는 대규모 서비스를 개발하는 내부 팀을 면밀히 분석한 뒤 도출한 3가지 핵심 통찰을 바탕으로 프론티어 에이전트를 만들었다고 설명했다. 먼저 AWS는 에이전트가 잘하는 일과 그렇지 않은 일을 명확히 구분하는 것이 중요하다는 점을 확인했다. 이를 통해 개발팀은 에이전트의 모든 세부 작업을 일일이 지켜보며 간섭하는 방식에서 벗어나, 큰 목표와 방향을 제시하고 그 안에서 스스로 일을 진행하게 하는 운영 방식으로 전환할 수 있었다. 다음 통찰은 팀의 개발 속도가 얼마나 많은 에이전트 기반 작업을 동시에 돌릴 수 있는지에 크게 좌우됐다는 점이다. 마지막으로 에이전트는 독립적으로 운영되는 시간이 길어질수록 성과가 좋아졌다.

AWS Transform now supports agentic modernization of custom code

Does AI-generated code add to, or reduce, technical debt? Amazon Web Services is aiming to reduce it with the addition of new capabilities to AWS Transform, its AI-driven service for modernizing legacy code, applications, and infrastructure.

“Modernization is no longer optional for enterprises these days,” said Akshat Tyagi, associate practice leader at HFS Research. They need cleaner code and updated SDKs to run AI workloads, tighten security, and meet new regulations, he said, but their inability to modernize custom code quickly and with little manual effort is one of the major drivers of technical debt.

AWS Transform was introduced in May to accelerate the modernization of VMware systems and  Windows .Net and mainframe applications using agentic AI. Now, at AWS re:Invent, it’s getting some additional capabilities in those areas — and new custom code modernization features besides.

New mainframe modernization agents add functions including activity analysis to help decide whether to modernize or retire code; blueprints to identify the business functions and flows hidden in legacy code; and automated test plan generation.

AWS Transform for VMware gains new functionality including an on-premises discovery tool; support for configuration migration of network security tools from Cisco ACI, Fortigate, and Palo Alto Networks; and a migration planning agent that draws business context from unstructured documents, files, chats and business rules.

The company is also inviting partners to integrate their proprietary migration tools and agents with its platform through a new AWS Transform composability initiative. Accenture, Capgemini, and Pegasystems are the first on board.

Customized modernization for custom code

On top of that, there’s a whole new agent, AWS Transform custom, designed to reduce the manual effort involved in custom code modernization by learning a custom pattern and operationalizing it throughout the target codebase or SDK. In order to feed the agent the unique pattern, enterprise teams can use natural-language instructions, internal documentation, or example code snippets that illustrate how specific upgrades should be performed.

AWS Transform custom then applies these patterns consistently across large, multi-repository codebases, automatically identifying similar structures and making the required changes at scale; developers can then review and fine-tune the output, which the agent adapts and operationalizes, allowing it to continually refine its accuracy, the company said.

Generic is no longer good enough

Tyagi said that the custom code modernization approach taken by AWS is better than most generic modernization tools, which rely solely on pre-packaged rules for modernization.

“Generic modernization tools no longer cut it. Every day we come across enterprises complaining that the legacy systems are now so intertwined that pre-built transformation rules are now bound to fail,” he said.

Pareekh Jain, principal analyst at Pareekh Consulting, said Transform custom’s ability to support custom SDK modernization will also act as a value driver for many enterprises.

“SDK mismatch is a major but often hidden source of tech debt. Large enterprises run hundreds of microservices on mismatched SDK versions, creating security, compliance, and stability risks,” Jain said.

“Even small SDK changes can break pipelines, permissions, or runtime behavior, and keeping everything updated is one of the most time-consuming engineering tasks,” he said.

Similarly, enterprises will find support for modernization of custom infrastructure-as-code (IaC) particularly valuable, Tyagi said, because it tends to fall out of date quickly as cloud services and security rules evolve.

Large organizations, the analyst noted, often delay touching IaC until something breaks, since these files are scattered across teams and full of outdated patterns, making it difficult and error-prone to clean up manually.

For many enterprises, 20–40% of modernization work is actually refactoring IaC, Jain said.

Not a magic button

However, enterprises shouldn’t see AWS Transform’s new capabilities as a magic button to solve their custom code modernization issues.

Its reliability will depend on codebase consistency, the quality of examples, and the complexity of underlying frameworks, said Jain.

But, said Tyagi, real-world code is rarely consistent.

“Each individual writes it with their own methods and perceptions or habits. So the tool might get some parts right and struggle with others. That’s why you still need developers to review the changes, and this is where human intervention becomes significant,” Tyagi said.

There is also upfront work, Jain said: Senior engineers must craft examples and review output to ground the code modernization agent and reduce hallucinations.

The new features are now available and can be accessed via AWS Transform’s conversational interface on the web and the command line interface (CLI).

Seattle biotech startup Curi Bio lands $10M to expand its R&D support for drug discovery

Seattle biotech startup Curi Bio, which enables the screening of new drugs using cells and 3D tissue models derived from human cells, announced $10 million in new funding.

Curi Bio’s customers include large biopharmaceutical and biotech companies such Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, Astrazeneca, Pfizer, Boehringer Ingelheim, UCB, Novartis and others. Its Series B round was led by Seoul-based DreamCIS, which supports biopharma R&D through extensive research services.

“We are thrilled to partner with DreamCIS, who shares our conviction that drug discovery urgently needs more human-relevant data at the preclinical stage,” said Michael Cho, Curi Bio’s chief strategy officer, in a statement. “The vast majority of new drugs fail in human clinical trials because preclinical animal and 2D cell models have failed to be good predictors of human outcomes.”

Curi Bio’s platform integrates bioengineered tissues created from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) with data collection and analysis. The additional funding will expedite its development of new platforms for cardiac, skeletal muscle, metabolic, smooth muscle and neuromuscular diseases, the company said.

The Seattle area is a hub of life science and biotech companies, including numerous efforts focused on AI-assisted research. Researchers have emphasized the need to test computer-generated drug candidates in the lab to verify their capabilities and impacts.

“Curi Bio’s unique integration of cells, systems, and data is a paradigm shift for preclinical drug discovery,” said Jeounghee Yoo, CEO of DreamCIS. “We were incredibly impressed by the company’s innovative platforms and their ability to generate functional data from 3D human tissues at scale.”

Curi Bio has raised $20 million from investors and $12 million from federal grants.

The company spun out of the University of Washington a decade ago as NanoSurface Biomedical. In April, Curi Bio celebrated the opening of its new 13,942-square-foot headquarters and research facility on the Seattle waterfront.

프리랜서 소프트웨어 개발자로 성공하려면 충분한 준비와 꾸준한 노력이 필요하며, 일정 부분 운도 따라줘야 한다. 그러나 미국 프로야구 경영인 브랜치 리키의 말처럼, ‘운은 결국 치밀한 계산에서 비롯된 결과’이기도 하다.

프리랜서 개발자의 수입은 거주 지역, 경력, 역량, 프로젝트 유형 등 여러 요소에 따라 달라진다. 집리크루터(ZipRecruiter) 최신 자료에 따르면 미국 내 단기 계약직 개발자의 평균 연간 수입은 약 11만 1,800달러이며, 상위 개발자는 15만 1,000달러를 넘기기도 한다.

이는 미국 노동통계국이 발표한 2024년 기준 개발자 직군의 연봉 중위값과도 비슷한 수준이다.

그렇다면 기술 업계에서 프리랜서로 성공하기 위해 필요한 조건은 무엇일까? 전현직 프리랜서 개발자 5명의 의견을 전한다.

1. 비즈니스 형태 갖추기

공식적인 비즈니스 형태를 갖추는 일은 신규 고객을 확보하고 기존 고객을 유지하는 데 효과적이다.

K-12 학교를 위한 모금 플랫폼 퓨처펀드의 CEO이자 소프트웨어 엔지니어인 다리안 시미는 “프리랜서 개발자로 성공하기 위한 가장 중요한 방법은 자신을 하나의 사업체로 인식하는 것”이라고 설명했다.

시미는 “이를 위해 개인 사업자를 설립하고, 개인 자금과 사업 자금을 구분하며, 세금과 송장을 효율적으로 관리할 수 있는 도구를 활용해 규제 준수를 체계적으로 관리해야 한다”라고 말했다. 그는 “처음에는 과도하거나 불필요한 업무처럼 느껴질 수 있지만, 이런 구조가 고객의 신뢰를 높여주고 장기적으로 여러 문제를 피하게 해준다”라고 강조했다.

프리랜서 소프트웨어 엔지니어 경력 20년 이상인 소누 카푸어도 개발자들이 이런 구조의 가치를 과소평가한다고 지적했다. 그는 씨티그룹 글로벌 트레이딩 플랫폼 프론트엔드 설계, 아메리칸 어패럴의 RFID 통합, 소니뮤직퍼블리싱과 시스코의 엔터프라이즈 스택 현대화 작업 등을 수행해 왔다.

카푸어는 “프리랜서 개발자가 소규모 프로젝트에 그칠지 엔터프라이즈급 작업으로 확장할지는 결국 ‘어떻게 보이느냐’에 달려있다”라고 말했다. 그는 “프리랜서 초기부터 법인을 등록하고 재정을 분리하며, 퀵북스(QuickBooks)와 허브스폿(HubSpot) 같은 전문 도구를 활용해 업무를 회사처럼 관리했다. 실질적인 전환점은 씨티그룹과 소니뮤직퍼블리싱 같은 기업의 주요 의사결정권자들과 관계를 구축한 것이었다. 대기업은 개인을 직접 고용하는 경우가 거의 없으며, 대부분 벤더를 통해 계약이 이뤄진다”라고 설명했다.

카푸어는 의사결정권자와의 네트워크 형성에 집중하며, 과거 수행한 프로젝트와 기술적 관점을 통해 자신의 신뢰도를 증명했다. 그는 “체계화된 업무 구조와 네트워크의 조합은 기술 역량만으로는 열리지 않는 문을 열어줬다. 프로세스, 관계, 전문성을 갖춘 비즈니스로 프리랜서 업무를 대하면서 지속적인 파트너십을 발굴할 수 있었다. 중요한 것은 규모가 큰 회사인 척하는 것이 아니라, 큰 회사와 동일한 신뢰성과 체계를 갖춰 운영하는 일”이라고 조언했다.

2. 전문 분야를 찾기

개발 분야에서 여러 기술을 두루 다루는 일은 광범위한 프로젝트를 수행할 때 도움이 된다. 그러나 전문화를 통해 성과를 얻는 경우도 많다.

카푸어는 “여러 프레임워크에 역량을 분산시키지 않고 앵귤러(Angular)에 완전히 집중하기로 결정한 것이 프리랜서 개발 경력의 가장 큰 도약이었다”라고 말했다. 그는 역량 집중이 자신의 전문 정체성을 새롭게 구축하는 계기가 됐다면서, 구글 핵심 팀과 직접 협업하는 전 세계 11명의 앵귤러 협력 그룹에 초청됐다고 설명했다.

이후 카푸어는 구글 개발자 전문가(Google Developer Expert)로 인정받으며 강연과 컨설팅, 글로벌 활동 기회를 얻었다. 특히 뉴욕 타임스퀘어 톱메이트 광고판에 그의 앵귤러 및 AI 관련 활동이 소개되면서 이름을 더욱 알리게 됐다.

그는 전문성의 깊이가 자연스럽게 새로운 기회를 불러왔다고 했다. 개발자 출판 분야에서 기술 편집자와 기고자로 활동하던 그의 작업을 본 에이프레스(Apress)가 앵귤러 시그널을 주제로 한 책 집필을 제안한 것이다.

카푸어는 “이는 코딩 실력을 넘어, 개발자들이 새로운 기술을 배우는 방식을 설계하는 영역으로 경력이 확장된 순간이었다”라며 “전문화는 곧 정체성을 만든다. 전문성이 특정 분야의 발전과 맞물리기 시작하면 프로젝트, 미디어, 출판 등 다양한 기회가 스스로 찾아온다”라고 조언했다.

퓨처펀드의 시미 역시 비슷한 경험을 했다. 그는 “초기에는 정말 모든 고객에게 모든 것을 제공하려 했다”라고 말했다. 이어 “많은 개발 에이전시가 비슷한 고민을 한다. 한두 분야로 전문화할지, 아니면 다섯여섯 분야에서 그럭저럭 할 수 있는 수준을 지향할지 결정해야 한다. 전문화는 경쟁 속에서 돋보이게 만들고, 평판을 형성하며, 더 쉽게 추천을 받도록 한다”라고 언급했다.

3. 눈에 보이는 작업으로 전문성을 증명

카푸어는 오픈소스 작업을 공개하고 기술 담론으로 이름을 알리는 것이 프리랜서 개발자에게 새로운 기회를 열어줄 수 있다고 말했다. 그는 “경력 초기 ‘닷넷슬래커스(DotNetSlackers)’라는 기술 커뮤니티를 만들었는데, 조회 수가 3,300만 회를 넘어서며 닷넷(.NET) 관련 콘텐츠를 찾는 이들에게 큰 주목을 받았다. 당시에는 몰랐지만 이 정도의 도달력은 어떤 마케팅 수단보다 강력했다”라고 회상했다.

그 결과 기업 CTO와 엔지니어링 매니저가 자연스럽게 그의 작업을 발견하기 시작했다. 그는 “첫 주요 엔터프라이즈 계약은 몇 달 동안 글을 읽어온 고객으로부터 제안됐다”라고 언급했다.

카푸어는 앵귤러로 전문 영역을 옮긴 이후에도 같은 원칙을 적용했다. 그는 “오픈소스 활동을 통해 1년 동안 앵귤러 저장소에 100건 이상의 코드 변경을 기여했다. 특히 앵귤러 역사상 가장 많은 추천을 받은 기능 요청인 ‘타입드 폼(Typed Forms)’에 기여한 작업이 글로벌 개발자 커뮤니티에 노출됐고, 이는 마이크로소프트 MVP와 이후 구글 개발자 전문가 선정으로 이어졌다”라고 밝혔다.

카푸어는 오픈소스 라이브러리, 기술 컨퍼런스 발표, CODE 매거진 기고 등 눈에 보이는 모든 작업이 프리랜서 개발자의 신뢰를 쌓는 자산이 된다고 조언했다. 그는 “개발자는 문서화된 하나의 아이디어가 얼마나 멀리 퍼질 수 있는지 종종 과소평가한다. 한 편의 블로그 글이 몇 년 뒤 새로운 고객을 불러올 수도 있다. 내 경우, 초기의 작은 노력들이 시간이 지나도 계속 미디어 노출, 컨설팅 기회, 기술적 인정으로 이어지는 선순환을 만들었다”라고 설명했다.

4. 관계 구축의 핵심은 ‘커뮤니케이션’

프리랜서는 어떤 분야에서든 글쓰기나 대화를 통해 효과적으로 소통하는 능력이 중요하다. 뛰어난 개발자라 하더라도 소통이 부족하면 새로운 일을 확보하기 어려워진다.

웹 디자인·개발·호스팅 서비스 업체 18a의 CEO 리사 프리먼은 “수년간 프리랜서 개발자로 일하고, 지금은 개발 에이전시를 운영하는 입장에서 가장 중요한 조언은 언제나 명확하고 충분하게 소통하는 것”이라고 말했다.

프리먼은 “일부 고객과 10년 넘게 협업을 이어온 비결이 바로 커뮤니케이션에 있다. 경쟁이 치열한 요즘은 새로운 고객을 매번 확보하는 것보다 기존 고객을 유지하는 것이 훨씬 수월하다”라고 설명했다.

프리먼은 고객과의 관계가 코드 자체만큼이나 중요하다고 강조했다. 그는 “불필요하고 복잡한 설명으로 혼란을 주지 말고, 왜 그런 방식으로 작업했는지를 명확하게 설명해야 한다”라고 조언했다.

프리먼은 많은 개발자가 놓치기 쉬운 부분으로 ‘자신이 이룬 가치’를 명확히 전달하지 않는 점을 꼽는다. 그는 “고객이 특정 기능을 요청한 뒤, 개발자가 향후 업무를 더 빠르게 하거나 다른 문제를 해결하는 기반까지 마련했다면 반드시 알려야 한다. 사소해 보여도 이런 부가적인 노력이 고객의 인식에 긍정적인 인상을 남기고, 다시 찾게 만드는 결정적 요인이 된다”라고 설명했다.

2022년부터 전업 프리랜서 개발자로 활동 중인 미아 코탈릭은 좋은 커뮤니케이션의 핵심이 기술적 용어를 더 이해하기 쉬운 언어로 ‘번역’하는 능력이라고 강조했다.

코탈릭은 “기술 용어를 나열해 비전문가인 고객을 압도해서는 신뢰를 얻을 수 없다. 이는 고객을 위축시키고 대화를 피하게 만든다. 먼저 비기술적으로 개념을 설명하고, 이후 핵심 용어를 짧고 명확한 정의와 함께 제시하면 고객은 부담 없이 이해할 수 있다”라고 조언했다. 이어 그는 “이 능력이 강력한 차별화 요소가 될 수 있다. 고객은 계획을 이해하고, 존중받고 있다고 느끼며, 동시에 개발자가 기술적으로도 충분히 탄탄하다고 인식한다. 프리랜서에게 가장 중요한 역량이라고 해도 과언이 아니다”라고 말했다.

5. 작업 포트폴리오 구축

포트폴리오는 개발자가 제공할 수 있는 가치를 가장 명확하게 보여주는 자료다. 기술 역량과 경험을 증명하는 핵심 도구이자, 새로운 고객과 프로젝트를 유치하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 잘 구성된 포트폴리오는 이력서와 함께 개발자의 실력을 입증하는 자료가 된다.

맞춤형 디지털 제품 개발사 인스파이어링앱스(InspiringApps)의 설립자이자, 과거 12년 동안 프리랜서 개발자로 활동했던 브래드 웨버는 “프리랜서 개발자에게 의뢰하는 것 자체가 고객에게는 일종의 위험 부담”이라고 말했다.

웨버는 “고객의 불안을 줄이기 위해 레퍼런스로 제시할 수 있는 유사 프로젝트를 갖추는 것이 중요하다. 프리랜서 초기에는 포트폴리오 부족으로 어려움을 겪을 수 있지만, 이 경우 지인, 가족, 비영리 단체를 위해 무료 또는 매우 낮은 비용으로 작업하는 방식이 효과적이었다”라고 조언했다.

코탈릭은 처음 시작하는 프리랜서 개발자가 포트폴리오를 쌓기 위해 고객을 기다릴 필요도 없다고 강조했다. 그는 “여유 시간에 앱이나 웹사이트를 직접 만들 수 있다. 내 경우 첫 번째 개인 프로젝트는 완전히 무료로 만들었지만, 두 번째 취미 프로젝트를 진행할 때쯤 유료 고객이 먼저 연락을 보내오기 시작했다”라고 설명했다.

After a Witcher-free decade, CDPR still promises three sequels in six years

It’s been over 10 years since the launch of the excellent The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and nearly four years since the announcement of “the next installment in The Witcher series of video games.” Despite those long waits, developer CD Projekt Red is still insisting it will deliver the next three complete Witcher games in a short six-year window.

In a recent earnings call, CDPR VP of Business Development Michał Nowakowski suggested that a rapid release schedule would be enabled in no small part by the team’s transition away from its proprietary REDEngine to the popular Unreal Engine in 2022. At the time, CDPR said the transition to Unreal Engine would “elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools.” Those considerations seemed especially important in the wake of widespread technical issues with the console versions of Cyberpunk 2077, which CDPR later blamed on REDEngine’s “in-game streaming system.”

“We’re happy with how [Unreal Engine] is evolving through the Epic team’s efforts, and how we are learning how to make it work within a huge open-world game, as [The Witcher 4] is meant to be,” Nowakowski said in the recent earnings call. “In a way, yes, I do believe that further games should be delivered in a shorter period of time—as we had stated before, our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period, so yes, that would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between TW4 and TW5, between TW5 and TW6 and so on.”

From cloud-native to AI-native: Why your infrastructure must be rebuilt for intelligence

The cloud-native ceiling

For the past decade, the cloud-native paradigm — defined by containers, microservices and DevOps agility — served as the undisputed architecture of speed. As CIOs, you successfully used it to decouple monoliths, accelerate release cycles and scale applications on demand.

But today, we face a new inflection point. The major cloud providers are no longer just offering compute and storage; they are transforming their platforms to be AI-native, embedding intelligence directly into the core infrastructure and services. This is not just a feature upgrade; it is a fundamental shift that determines who wins the next decade of digital competition. If you continue to treat AI as a mere application add-on, your foundation will become an impediment. The strategic imperative for every CIO is to recognize AI as the new foundational layer of the modern cloud stack.

This transition from an agility-focused cloud-native approach to an intelligence-focused AI-native one requires a complete architectural and organizational rebuild. It is the CIO’s journey to the new digital transformation in the AI era. According to McKinsey’s “The state of AI in 2025: Agents, innovation and transformation,” while 80 percent of respondents set efficiency as an objective of their AI initiatives, the leaders of the AI era are those who view intelligence as a growth engine, often setting innovation and market expansion as additional, higher-value objectives.

The new architecture: Intelligence by design

The AI lifecycle — data ingestion, model training, inference and MLOps — imposes demands that conventional, CPU-centric cloud-native stacks simply cannot meet efficiently. Rebuilding your infrastructure for intelligence focuses on three non-negotiable architectural pillars:

1. GPU-optimization: The engine of modern compute

The single most significant architectural difference is the shift in compute gravity from the CPU to the GPU. AI models, particularly large language models (LLMs), rely on massive parallel processing for training and inference. GPUs, with their thousands of cores, are the only cost-effective way to handle this.

  • Prioritize acceleration: Establish a strategic layer to accelerate AI vector search and handle data-intensive operations. This ensures that every dollar spent on high-cost hardware is maximized, rather than wasted on idle or underutilized compute cycles.
  • A containerized fabric: Since GPU resources are expensive and scarce, they must be managed with surgical precision. This is where the Kubernetes ecosystem becomes indispensable, orchestrating not just containers, but high-cost specialized hardware.

2. Vector databases: The new data layer

Traditional relational databases are not built to understand the semantic meaning of unstructured data (text, images, audio). The rise of generative AI and retrieval augmented generation (RAG) demands a new data architecture built on vector databases.

  • Vector embeddings — the mathematical representations of data — are the core language of AI. Vector databases store and index these embeddings, allowing your AI applications to perform instant, semantic lookups. This capability is critical for enterprise-grade LLM applications, as it provides the model with up-to-date, relevant and factual company data, drastically reducing “hallucinations.”

The U.K. government has moved a step closer to overhauling how decentralized finance activity is taxed, backing a new framework that would spare users from triggering capital gains each time they deposit tokens into lending protocols or liquidity pools.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) published its updated position this week, showing support for a “no gain, no loss” model that would align tax events with actual economic outcomes rather than every token movement.

UK Proposes Taxing DeFi Gains Only at Withdrawal, Not at Deposit

Under the current system, DeFi users can incur a capital gains tax charge simply by depositing tokens into a protocol, even if they retain exposure to the same asset.

That interpretation treats deposits as disposals, forcing users into complex record-keeping and potential tax bills before any real profit is made.

The proposed change would defer tax until users eventually sell, swap, or otherwise dispose of their assets in a way that reflects a genuine gain or loss.

HMRC’s revised approach follows more than two years of consultations, including a public call for evidence in 2022 and a formal consultation in mid-2023.

A newly published summary shows that 32 organizations and individuals submitted detailed responses, including Aave, Binance, Deloitte, CryptoUK, and several major accounting firms.

Many respondents argued that the current rules distort economic reality and place disproportionate administrative burdens on everyday DeFi participants.

The “no gain, no loss” model would apply to both single-token lending arrangements and more complex multi-token setups such as automated market makers.

That means users supplying liquidity to pools would no longer be taxed at the point of deposit. Instead, tax would be calculated when tokens are withdrawn and ultimately sold.

If users receive more tokens back than they deposited, the excess would be taxable as a gain. If they receive fewer, it would be treated as a loss.

The framework would also apply to crypto borrowing arrangements. When users borrow tokens and later repay them, the disposal would be calculated only from the difference between what was borrowed and what is returned.

Notably, this will ensure the tax bill reflects real gains rather than notional movements between smart contracts.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov described the update as a “major win for U.K. DeFi users,” noting that HMRC’s willingness to treat deposits as non-disposals reflects how decentralized protocols function in practice.

The changes do not show a loosening of the U.K.’s overall crypto tax regime. Cryptoassets remain classified as property, and disposals such as selling, swapping, or spending tokens are still subject to capital gains tax.

Income from mining, staking rewards, airdrops, and employment-related crypto continues to fall under income tax rules.

HMRC emphasized that even under the revised framework, users may still be required to report high volumes of transactions, though the agency is working with software providers to assess the burden.

The updated DeFi tax approach comes as the U.K. steps up enforcement efforts across the crypto sector. HMRC issued 65,000 “nudge letters” to suspected under-reporters this year, a 134% increase from 2024, using exchange-supplied data to identify potential cases.

Alongside tax reforms, the government is pushing ahead with broader digital-market restructuring. 믹스패널 CEO 젠 테일러는 “11월 8일 스미싱 공격을 탐지하고 즉시 사고 대응 절차를 가동했다”라고 밝혔다.

스미싱은 특정 직원을 대상으로 한 문자메시지 피싱 공격 방식으로, 일반적인 기업 보안 통제를 우회할 수 있어 공격자들이 자주 활용한다. 이번 공격으로 해커는 믹스패널 시스템에 접근해 오픈AI 플랫폼(platform.openai.com) 계정 프로필과 관련된 다양한 메타데이터를 탈취했다. 구체적인 데이터는 다음과 같다.

Windows, macOS, and Linux are the three major desktop OSs in today’s world. However, there could soon be a new contender, with Google stepping up to the plate (via The Verge).

You’ve probably used Google’s operating systems before. Android holds a dominant market share in the smartphone space, and ChromeOS is readily available on a large range of notebooks intended for lightweight tasks. Going forward, it appears Google aims to leverage its experience with these products and merge them into something new under the working title of “Aluminium OS.”

The news comes to us via a job listing, which sought a Senior Product Manager to work on a “new Aluminium, Android-based, operating system.” The hint is in the name—with speculation that the -ium part of Aluminium indicates its relationship to Chromium, the open-source version of Chrome. The listing also indicated that the new OS would have “Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core.” At this stage, it appears Google will target everything from cheaper entry level hardware to mid-market and premium machines.

It’s early days yet, and there’s no word as to when Google might speak more officiously on the topic of its new operating system. It’s a big move from one of the largest tech companies out there. Even still, it will be a tall order for Google to knock off the stalwart offerings from Microsoft and Apple in any meaningful way.
