Ethereum Funding Rates Pushing Towards Negative: What’s Going On?

Ethereum is currently trading under pressure after failing to push above the $3,000 level again over the past 24 hours, a move that is reflecting trader sentiment across the derivatives markets. ETH is currently trading at $2,925, down 2.7% on the day, after moving within a 24-hour range capped at $3,012.99 and finding lows around $2,909.60, according to price data from CoinGecko. 

As price action weakens, a notable change has been developing, with on-chain data showing funding rates drifting toward negative territory and derivative positioning beginning to tilt more defensively.

Funding Rates Slide As Shorts Gain Ground

Ethereum’s failure to hold above $3,000 is an important psychological break for traders, especially after several failed attempts to hold above that level in January. Price action over the past week shows sellers maintaining control after ETH rejected around $3,360 on January 18, followed by a steady push lower toward the high-$2,900s. 

Although the pullback has so far been orderly above $2,900, this decline has come alongside fading momentum across the derivatives market.

One of the clearest signals for this can be seen in Ethereum’s OI-weighted funding rate, which has been steadily compressing and is now edging toward negative levels. At the time of writing, Ethereum’s OI-weighted is at 0.0008%, close to breaking into negative territory and far below readings around 0.009%, which it registered earlier in the month.

Funding rates turning negative typically indicate that short positions are paying longs, meaning stronger demand for downside exposure. Funding spikes that previously accompanied the price rebound in early January have faded, and the overall trend suggests bearish positioning is slowly gaining the upper hand.

Open Interest, Liquidations, And What’s Next

Although Ethereum’s price action fell below $3,000, derivatives traders have stayed in the market, keeping total open interest at high levels. Data from CoinGlass shows aggregate Ethereum open interest increasing by 0.68% in the past 24 hours, which shows that many traders are not exiting Ethereum entirely. At the time of writing, the total open interest is sitting at about 13.36 million ETH, equivalent to roughly $39.19 billion.

Looking across major exchanges, Binance has the largest share of ETH open interest, accounting for about $8.95 billion, but it is down by 0.8% in the past 24 hours. CME follows with approximately $5.73 billion in open interest, up by 3.72% in the past 24 hours. Gate comes next at around $4.01 billion, while MEXC comes in close at $3.51 billion worth of ETH open interest.

Over the past 24 hours, Ethereum liquidations totaled $64.34 million, with long positions ($52.52 million) accounting for the majority of losses.

A hold above $2,900 could allow Ethereum’s funding rates to normalize and open the door for another rebound attempt to $3,000. However, a continued fall in funding rates into negative territory could see bearish control pushing Ethereum below $2,900.

The Shiba Inu price crashed to as low as $0.000007683 yesterday, sparking bearish sentiment towards the meme coin. This crash came on the back of a transfer of billions of SHIB tokens, which raised concerns of a potential sell-off by the whale in question. 

Why The Shiba Inu Price Crashed

The Shiba Inu price crashed amid significant selling pressure, with a SHIB whale sending billions of tokens to Robinhood, likely to offload these tokens. Arkham data shows that the whale (0x2d0…9f7bB) first sent 210.365 billion SHIB tokens, worth $1.63 million, to the crypto exchange. These tokens represented about 97% of the whale’s SHIB holdings.

Further data from Arkham shows that the SHIB whale sent an additional 1.52 billion tokens to Robinhood and 7 billion tokens to liquidity provider B2C2 Group, which could be an OTC sale. The Shiba Inu price has notably crashed by over 7% in the last week, and it suffered its worst drop during this period yesterday amid the whale’s transfers. The whale now holds only 5.86 billion SHIB, worth $46,790.

The Shiba Inu price also crashed due to the sell-off in the broader crypto market, led by Bitcoin. BC dropped to as low as $87,000 yesterday amid concerns over trade tensions between the U.S. and Europe stemming from the Greenland-linked Trump tariffs. However, the market recovered towards the end of the day as Trump announced that he had canceled the proposed tariffs, having reached a Greenland deal with NATO.  

Despite the recent Shiba Inu price crash, the meme coin is still up over 15% year-to-date (YTD) and ranks among the best-performing crypto assets this year. However, SHIb is still far off from its current all-time high (ATH) of $0.00008845. 

Exchange Netflows For SHIB Remains Mixed

SHIB’s exchange netflows have remained mixed, indicating there is no clear accumulation pattern for the meme coin at the moment. CryptoQuant data shows that today’s net flows are negative, totaling just over 7 billion Shiba Inu tokens, suggesting that more coins are flowing into exchanges than out.

However, the total exchanges’ netflows yesterday were positive, at 1.6 billion tokens, indicating more tokens leaving exchanges, which is bullish for the Shiba Inu price as it hints at accumulation from whales. On January 16, SHIB’s netflows were also positive, totaling around 115 billion tokens. However, the positive netflows on that day were overshadowed by the negative flows of 214 billion SHIB recorded on January 20.

Crypto traders still remain bullish on the Shiba Inu price as CoinGlass data shows the long/short ratio is currently above 1. Derivatives trading volume has also jumped by over 20% while the open interest is up almost 3%. 

At the time of writing, the Shiba Inu price is trading at around $0.000007978, up in the last 24 hours, according to data from CoinMarketCap.

And up first, what’s considered by many to be the ultimate barbecue: the pork rib.

Actually, there are four kinds of pork ribs and at least three recommended ways to cook them. Everyone should know how to barbecue ribs, so read on:

The various types of pork ribs:

The most popular is the baby back rib, aka top loin rib. Cut from high on the hog (next to the backbone), it’s tender, well-marbled, and relatively quick cooking. Everybody loves baby back ribs.

Below the baby back (anatomically speaking) comes the spare rib—a meaty rack that’s larger, slightly tougher, and intensely flavorful. It should be cooked “low and slow” (at a low temperature for a long time) to achieve the requisite tenderness.

3-2-1 Barbecued Spare Ribs

Trim the cartilaginous bottom (called rib tips), the last two ribs on the narrow end of the rack, and some of the fat off a rack of spareribs and you get a St. Louis cut—a spare rib that looks and cooks like a baby back. Pro tip: Use the rib tips and any meaty trim to flavor baked beans, soup, or pork stock.

The fourth kind of rib—the country-style rib—isn’t really a rib at all. It’s an odd cut from the hog’s neck that looks and cooks like a thick elongated pork chop. It may or may not have a bone. It should be direct grilled, exactly as you’d do with a pork steak or chop. Pro tip: Boneless country-style ribs can easily be turned into kebabs by slicing the meat into 1-inch cubes. Marinate, if desired, then skewer and grill with your favorite accompaniments. (We love pineapple. Tacos al pastor, anyone?)

The various ways to cook ribs:

Ribs are highly versatile in that they can be cooked a variety of ways. Baby backs can be indirect grilled at a higher temperature (300 to 325 degrees)—a process that will take around 2 hours, or smoked like true barbecue at 225 to 250 degrees (closer to 3-1/2 to 4 hours). Hawaiians cook them on the rotisserie. St. Louis-cut ribs can be cooked either way, too.

Spareribs should be cooked low and slow in a smoker: figure on 4 to 5 hours. Hickory is the traditional wood for smoking spareribs, but any hardwood works great.

Country-style ribs should be direct grilled—3 to 5 minutes per side over a medium-high flame should do it.

How to trim ribs:

A papery membrane covers the inside (the concave part) of your rib. Many pit masters remove it. (It’s said to interfere with the absorption of the spice and smoke flavors.). To do so, pry it up at the end of a couple of the rib bones with the end of a spoon handle. Grab it with a paper towel (it’s slippery and pull it off. At the same time, you can cut off any gross gobs of fat or dangly parts.

How to flavor ribs:

Take a page from the competition barbecuer’s playbook. Layer the flavors on your ribs. Start with a rub sprinkled over the ribs and rubbed into the meat. During the cook, you can spray your ribs apple cider, beer, or wine. Right at the end, brush on your favorite barbecue sauce, then sizzle the ribs directly over the fire for a minute or two—just long enough to sear the sauce into the meat. Do not apply the sauce too early, or the sugar in it will burn. Pro tip: Before applying a rub, slather the rack of ribs with yellow mustard.

The three-two-one method:

This one was all the rage on social media a few years ago. In a nutshell, you smoke the ribs uncovered for 3 hours, then wrapped in foil with butter and apple juice for 2 hours, then finish uncovered for 1 additional hour. Those numbers work for spareribs, but for baby backs, I recommend 3-1-1 timing.

How do you know when the ribs are cooked:

Ribs should be tender, but still have a little chew to them. In my opinion, the meat should not fall off the bone. (Such ribs were probably boiled or braised before grilling.)

Ribs should be cooked until the meat shrinks back from the ends of the bones by 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Another test for doneness is to lift the rack in the middle with tongs. The meat should start to tear at the top.

Yet another test is to pull a rib off the rack. You should be able to tear it apart with your fingers.

So what else should you know?

Where your pork comes from matters as much as how you cook it. I’m partial to heritage breeds like Duroc or Berkshire.

invest in a rib rack, which holds the racks upright so you can fit four racks instead of two on your grill. A must for a small cooker, like a Weber Kettle or Smokey Mountain.

What are the different types of pork ribs?
There are four main types of pork ribs: baby back ribs, spareribs, St. Louis–cut ribs, and country-style ribs. Baby backs are tender and quick cooking, spareribs are meatier and best cooked low and slow, St. Louis ribs are trimmed spareribs that cook evenly, and country-style ribs are not true ribs and should be grilled like pork chops.

Barbecue sauce should be applied near the end of cooking. Adding it too early can cause the sugars in the sauce to burn. Brush it on during the final minutes, then briefly sear the ribs over direct heat to set the sauce.

Are We Ready for AR Smart Glasses Yet?

In a recent article from IEEE Spectrum, [Alfred Poor] asks the question what do consumers really want in smart glasses? And are you finally ready to hang a computer screen on your face?

[Alfred] says that since Google Glass was introduced in 2012, smart glasses haven’t yet found their compelling use-case. Apparently it looks like while virtual reality (VR) might be out, augmented reality (AR) might be in. And of course now we have higher levels of “AI” in the mix, whatever that means.

According to the article in the present day there are two competing visions of what smart glasses might be: we have One Pro from Xreal in Beijing, and AI Glasses from Halliday in Singapore, each representing different design concepts evolving in today’s market. The article goes into further detail. The video below the break is promotional material from Halliday showing people’s reactions to their AI Glasses product.

[Alfred] talks with Louis Rosenberg, CEO and chief scientist of Unanimous AI, who says he believes “that within five years, immersive AI-powered glasses will replace the smartphone as the primary mobile device in our digital lives.” Predicting the future is hard, but what do you think?
