How Medical Cannabis in the UK Is Helping Seniors Live Healthier, Happier Lives

17 April 2025 at 11:02

Β

For seniors, aging often comes with its fair share of challenges – chronic pain, sleepless nights, and the need for safer treatment options. While the US cannabis market is thriving with innovative products and accessibility, the UK offers a different, patient-focused approach that’s reshaping care for older adults.

Β

With over 12.5 million people aged 65 and older, seniors in the UK are turning to cannabis for pain and carefully tailored UK cannabis strains to find relief from conditions like arthritis and sleep disorders.

Β

By focusing on safety and regulation, the UK provides an example of how medical cannabis can meet the needs of aging populations – a lesson the US may find valuable as the industry continues to grow.

Β

Why do seniors struggle with traditional treatments?

Β

Chronic pain is a reality for many older adults, often caused by conditions like arthritis, back injuries, and fibromyalgia. Conventional treatments (opioids, NSAIDs, or sleep aids) come with significant drawbacks. Side effects like dependency, gastrointestinal issues, and diminished effectiveness over time make these options less than ideal, especially for vulnerable aging bodies.

Β

Are older patients more open to cannabis now?

Β

The short answer? Yes. As education and destigmatization efforts continue, more seniors are exploring cannabis as a natural alternative. In the UK, 1.4 million people already use cannabis recreationally for medical purposes, with chronic pain as one of the leading drivers.

Β

This trend reflects a growing openness to plant-based solutions that can address both pain and sleep issues safely.

Β

How is medical cannabis transforming senior care in the UK?

Β

For older adults who have exhausted traditional treatments, medical cannabis has been nothing short of life-changing. Arthritis patients report regaining mobility, while those with chronic pain find relief without the side effects of opioids.

Β

What does a patient-first approach look like?

Β

Unlike the US, where cannabis is widely accessible but unevenly regulated, the UK ensures every prescription is tailored to individual needs. Products undergo rigorous testing, guaranteeing both safety and efficacy. A study from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry revealed that 45.4% of chronic pain patients also experience sleep impairmentsβ€”issues that medical cannabis uniquely addresses by tackling pain and improving rest simultaneously.

Β

Clinics like Releaf are at the forefront of this shift. Known for their high standards and patient-first ethos, they represent what’s possible when regulation meets innovation. While the UK’s system is smaller and slower to grow compared to the US, it prioritizes trust and long-term care over commercial gains.

Β

How does the US approach chronic pain differently?

Β

The US cannabis market is an undeniable world-leading powerhouse, offering products and services that reflect the creativity of the industry. From THC-infused beverages to same-day delivery, dispensaries on almost every corner in certain cities, and some of the very best bud known to man, patients have a level of accessibility that the UK can’t match.

Β

But this abundance comes with its challenges. Over-commercialization has led to quality inconsistencies, and with regulations varying by state, patients are often left wondering if their cannabis is as safe as it should be.

Β

What can the US learn from the UK?

Β

By adopting some of the UK’s emphasis on safety and regulation, the US could create a more balanced system. Incorporating medical oversight into cannabis care wouldn’t stifle innovationβ€”it would enhance trust and ensure the industry meets the needs of its most vulnerable patients, including seniors.

Β

What does the future hold for seniors and cannabis in the UK?

Β

As wellness trends evolve, the demand for medical cannabis among seniors is set to rise. Chronic pain and sleep disorders will likely remain top priorities, but education and outreach could open the door for even more conditions to be treated.

Β

Could cannabis become a standard part of senior care?

Β

With clinics like Releaf leading the way in the UK, it’s easy to see how cannabis could integrate into senior care as a routine treatment. As research grows and collaboration between countries like the UK and US increases, cannabis could become a cornerstone of holistic health for aging populations.

Β

Final thoughts

Β

For older adults seeking relief from pain and sleep problems, medical cannabis offers hope where traditional medicine often fails. The UK’s careful, patient-first approach highlights what’s possible when safety and care take precedence a perspective that could benefit the growing US cannabis market as well.

Argentina Launches New Agency To Boost Cannabis Industry

27 January 2023 at 08:00

Argentina officially launched a new government agency on Wednesday as part of an effort to bolster the country’s medical marijuana and hemp industry.Β

Reuters reports that the agency, known as the Regulatory Agency for the Hemp and Medicinal Cannabis Industry, or ARICCAME, represents β€œthe first working group of a new national agency to regularize and promote the country’s nascent cannabis industry, which ministers hope will create new jobs and exports generating fresh income for the South American nation.”

β€œThis opens the door for Argentina to start a new path in terms of industrial exports, on the basis of huge global demand,” said Argentina’s economy minister Sergio Massa at an event marking the launch of the new agency.

According to Reuters, β€œMassa said that the agency would from Thursday begin regularizing programs and coordinating with various provinces and [the] industrial sector, adding Argentina already counted on demand for projects linked to the agro-industrial sector.”

On the official website for ARICCAME, the agency outlines its mission and objectives.

β€œWe are the Agency that regulates the import, export, cultivation, industrial production, manufacture, commercialization and acquisition, by any title, of seeds of the cannabis plant, cannabis and its derivative products for medicinal or industrial purposes,” the website reads, via an English translation.Β

The website lists the following β€œgeneral objectives” for the agency: β€œEstablish through the respective regulations, the regulatory framework for the entire production chain and national marketing and/or export of the Cannabis Sativa L. plant, seeds and derivatives for use in favor of health and industrial hemp; Promote a new agro-industrial productive sector for the commercial manufacture of medicines, phytotherapeutics, food and cosmetics for human use, medicines and food for veterinary use, as well as the different products made possible by industrial hemp; Generate the framework for the adaptation to the regulatory regime, of the cultivation and production of cannabis derivatives for use in existing health, guaranteeing the traceability and quality of the products in order to safeguard the right to health of the users of medical cannabis; Reintroduce hemp in Argentina and all its derivatives: food, construction materials, textile fiber, cellulose and bioplastics with low environmental impact; [and] Promote scientific research and sectoral technological progress, promoting favorable conditions for these existing industries in our country.”

ARICCAME’s specific objectives include: β€œEstablish clear rules that provide legal certainty to the sector and encourage federal participation; Articulate through agreements and conventions with other State entities with intervention in the matter: INASE, SENASA, INTA, INTI, AFIP, INAES, BCRA, UIF, National Universities, etc; Determine the system of licenses and administrative authorizations for the productive chain; Generate quality standards that safeguard the right to health of users and consumers of cannabis/hemp products; [and] Control non-compliance with the regulatory regime.”

Argentine policymakers legalized cannabis oil for medical use in 2017. Three years later, the country legalized home cannabis cultivation for medical marijuana patients.Β

The launch of the new agency is part of a border effort by the Argentine government to continue to reform the medical cannabis program, something that the South American country identified as a priority last year.Β

According to Reuters, the newly launched agency will be helmed by Francisco Echarren, who β€œsaid the industry could generate thousands of new jobs, as well as create technological developments and new products for export.”

β€œWe have a huge challenge ahead of us,” Echarren said, as quoted by Reuters, β€œnot only getting a new industry on its feet, but giving millions of Argentines access to products that improve quality of life.”
