Report: Apple plans to launch AI-powered wearable pin device as soon as 2027

Apple is working on a wearable device that will allow the user to take advantage of AI models, according to sources familiar with the product who spoke with tech publication The Information.

The product is said to be "the same size as an AirTag, only slightly thicker," and will be worn as a pin, inviting comparisons to the failed Humane AI pin that launched to bad reviews and lackluster sales in 2024. The Humane product was criticized for sluggish performance and low battery life, but those shortcomings could potentially be addressed by Apple's solution, should Apple offload the processing to a synced external device like an iPhone.

The Information's sources don't specify whether that's the plan, or if it will be a standalone device.

Why adding modern controls to 1996's Tomb Raider simply doesn't work

For a lot of the games I've written about in the C:\ArsGames series, I've come to the conclusion that the games hold up pretty well, despite their ageβ€”Master of Orion II, Jill of the Jungle, and Wing Commander Privateer, for example. Each of those have flaws that show now more than ever, but I still had a blast revisiting each of them.

This time I'd like to write about one that I think doesn't hold up quite as well for me: For the first time in almost 30 years, I revisited the original Tomb Raider via 2024's Tomb Raider I-III Remastered collection.

You might be thinking this is going to be a dunk on the work done on the remaster, but that's not the case, because the core issue with playing 1996's Tomb Raider in 2026 is actually unsolvable, no matter how much care is put into a remaster.

Civilization VII is headed to iPhone and iPad with β€œArcade Edition”

Civilization VII is coming to the iPhone and iPad, Apple and publisher 2K announced today.

Formally titled Sid Meier's Civilization VII Arcade Edition, it is developed by Behaviour Interactive with input from original developer Firaxis Games.

The game will be available as part of the Apple Arcade service, which offers ad-free games for Apple platforms for $7 per month. Neither announcement makes any mention of a non-Arcade version, so this appears to be exclusively part of the subscription.

Anthropic launches Cowork, a Claude Code-like for general computing

Anthropic's agentic tool Claude Code has been an enormous hit with some software developers and hobbyists, and now the company is bringing that modality to more general office work with a new feature called Cowork.

Built on the same foundations as Claude Code and baked into the macOS Claude desktop app, Cowork allows users to give Claude access to a specific folder on their computer and then give plain language instructions for tasks.

Anthropic gave examples like filling out an expense report from a folder full of receipt photos, writing reports based on a big stack of digital notes, or reorganizing a folder (or cleaning up your desktop) based on a prompt.

Even Linus Torvalds is trying his hand at vibe coding (but just a little)

Linux and Git creator Linus Torvalds' latest project contains code that was "basically written by vibe coding," but you shouldn't read that to mean that Torvalds is embracing that approach for anything and everything.

Torvalds sometimes works on small hobby projects over holiday breaks. Last year, he made guitar pedals. This year, he did some work on AudioNoise, which he calls "another silly guitar-pedal-related repo." It creates random digital audio effects.

Torvalds revealed that he had used an AI coding tool in the README for the repo:

OpenAI reorganizes some teams to build audio-based AI hardware products

OpenAI, the company that developed the models and products associated with ChatGPT, plans to announce a new audio language model in the first quarter of 2026, and that model will be an intentional step along the way to an audio-based physical hardware device, according to a report in The Information.

Citing a variety of sources familiar with the plans, including both current and former employees, The Information claims that OpenAI has taken efforts to combine multiple teams across engineering, product, and research under one initiative focused on improving audio models, which researchers in the company believe lag behind the models used for written text in terms of both accuracy and speed.

They have also seen that relatively few ChatGPT users opt to use the voice interface, with most people preferring the text one. The hope may be that substantially improving the audio models could shift user behavior toward voice interfaces, allowing the models and products to be deployed in a wider range of devices, such as in cars.
