Strava puts popular β€œYear in Sport” recap behind an $80 paywall

Earlier this month, Strava, the popular fitness-tracking app, released its annual β€œYear in Sport” wrap-upβ€”a cutesy, animated series of graphics summarizing each user’s athletic achievements.

But this year, for the first time, Strava made this feature available only to users with subscriptions ($80 per year), rather than making it free to everyone, as it had been historically since the review’s debut in 2016.

This decision has roiled numerous Strava users, particularly those who have relished the app’s social encouragement features. One Strava user in India, Shobhit Srivastava, β€œbegged” Strava to β€œlet the plebs see their Year in Sport too, please.” He later explained to Ars that having this little animated video is more than just a collection of raw numbers.

Twitter comeback bid draws lawsuit from Elon Musk’s X Corp

On Tuesday, X Corporation, formerly known as Twitter, sued β€œOperation Bluebird,” the new startup that is seeking to reclaim the allegedly abandoned Twitter trademark and relaunch a new social media network under that name.

One of Bluebird’s leaders, Michael Peroff, told Ars in an email that Operation Bluebird was β€œfully expecting” a lawsuit from X Corporation and that β€œwe planned for it.”

Operation Bluebird wants to relaunch β€œTwitter,” says Musk abandoned the name and logo

A Virginia startup calling itself β€œOperation Bluebird” announced this week that it has filed a formal petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office, asking the federal agency to cancel X Corporation’s trademarks of the words β€œTwitter” and β€œtweet” since X has allegedly abandoned them.

β€œThe TWITTER and TWEET brands have been eradicated from X Corp.’s products, services, and marketing, effectively abandoning the storied brand, with no intention to resume use of the mark,” the petition states. β€œThe TWITTER bird was grounded.”

If successful, two leaders of the group tell Ars, Operation Bluebird would launch a social network under the name Twitter.new, possibly as early as late next year. (Twitter.new has created a working prototype and is already inviting users to reserve handles.)
