How to Handle Edibles In Front of the Family on Thanksgiving

By: K. Astre

It’s that time of the year when everyone is coming together to celebrate everything they are grateful for with the people they love and a lot of food. Whether you’re going to be chilling at home with your loved ones, heading to an extended family member’s house for a big Thanksgiving feast or putting together a special Friendsgiving, you definitely want to know how to handle your edibles to ensure you can enjoy the day your way without making anyone else feel uncomfortable.

If you plan on partaking in edibles to enhance your Thanksgiving experience, there are a few things to consider before you commit to your plan. Do you want to arrive before or after the edibles kick in? Should you eat enough of your edible to make it last a while or consume it in a few smaller doses to keep you nice and evenly lit throughout the celebration? The details are really up to you, although there are some basics to follow that will ensure that you not only make it through the meal but through the entire day with a little grace.

Don’t Overdo It

Although you might have a usual amount of THC that hits the spot when you’re eating edibles, you should plan to have a little less than normal on days when you might need to have more of your wits about you. Even if you have a long car ride ahead of you or know that you will be sitting around for a few hours until the food is finished, don’t go overboard or you most likely end up sleeping through the festivities.

Give Yourself a Minute

Depending on when you eat your edibles, it may take a little longer than usual for you to feel the effects of them — particularly if you choose to eat them during (like with these recipes) or after you get nice and full. If that happens, then you will be a little more patient and wait to feel the way you’re typically used to. Just resist the urge to have more of your edible and you will be fine.

One Thing At a Time

If you have decided you want to enjoy edibles for the day, then just stick with edibles until you’re home or the party has ended. It may be tempting to go take a puff or dab with your favorite cousin or sneak your vape with you, but for your own sake, just take it easy. The same goes for wine and spirits, so make sure you have made your choice so that you won’t regret overindulging later.

Have a Back-up Plan

Getting higher than planned after eating an edible can happen to the best of us. If that happens, there are a couple of things you can do to make sure you are able to keep your cool and come back down to earth. First things first, have some CBD help calm things down. If things don’t settle, you can follow some of these tips for what to do if you get too high, which include finding an entertaining distraction, going for a stroll or just taking a nap.

Stick With What You Know

Yes, special days do call for special treats, but it’s probably best to stick to an infused snack that you have tried before just to be on the safe side. Even if you are pretty confident about how 10 mg or 50 mg of THC makes you feel on a normal day, there’s no use taking any risks with an unfamiliar brand that may be using an oil or strain you aren’t used to. So, you will have to wait to try that new soda or spicy nut mix until you’re in an environment where you can relax and see how it affects you.

Vegetable Soup with Medicated Garlic Croutons

The versatility of soup can be such a beautiful thing. It can be made with four ingredients or 40, completed in 15 minutes or simmered over several hours. In summertime soups are served deliciously chilled, like a supremely refreshing gazpacho — but most of the time they are steaming hot and soul satisfying, like this twice-medicated vegetable soup.  With the addition of infused olive oil, this recipe is a keeper.

A hearty soup, a simple salad and some crusty bread make for a fabulous winter meal. Vegetable soup is as simple to make as it is delicious. Just fill a sauce pot with any combination of vegetables, some liquid to cover, a bunch of your favorite fresh herbs and spices, maybe a can of your favorite legume and simmer. Nine times out of 10, it’ll be tasty. And if it’s not, add some shredded cheese, some sour cream and maybe some sriracha.

To add some protein, consider adding firm tofu cubes, sliced cooked sausage, cooked chicken or bacon crisps.

Vegetable Soup / Serves 8-10

Soup-Ingredients

Ingredients

2-3 tablespoons canna-olive oil
2 cups shredded cabbage
2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
1 large onion, sliced
1 cup green beans, trimmed and cut in pieces
1 cup grape tomatoes (cut in half if large)
3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
5 ounces kale, rinsed, dried, stacked and sliced
1 cup corn, frozen
½ cup peas, frozen
2 quarts water
2 cans beans (1 can white northern, 1 can pinto) rinsed and drained

Medicated Garlic Croutons

Canna-CroutonsResized

Ingredients

2 tablespoons canna-oil
1 cup bread cubes
4 tablespoons Parmesan cheese

Directions

1. Heat the canna-olive oil in a large saucepan. Sauté the cabbage, carrots, onion, green beans, grape tomatoes, garlic and kale. Sauté for 8 to 10 minutes.

2. Add the corn and peas and stir. Add the water, followed by the rinsed beans. Allow to simmer for 35 to 40 minutes.

3. Heat the remaining canna-olive oil in a small sauté pan. Cook the bread cubes until golden brown.

4. Divide the soup into bowls, top with croutons and shave the Parmesan over the bowls of soup.

10 Halloweed Products for the Season of High Spirits

Halloween for cannabis lovers has outgrown novelty gummies and glow-in-the-dark pipes. For this year’s Halloweed products round-up, we’ve wandered into the darker side of all that is dank. These products are all treats and no tricks, from dibles that enchant, tools sharp enough to raise spirits and bewitching accessories for stylish witches and warlocks.

Our 10 Halloweed product picks have something for everyone who knows that good taste is its own kind of magic.

Bite Club by Grön

Grön’s Bite Club gummies are edibles for people who like their Halloween with a little bite. This limited-edition release comes in two spooky flavors: Nocturnal Nectar and Vampire’s Kiss. Each piece has 10 mg of THC balanced with 10 mg of CBN or CBC, giving you a smooth, mellow high. CBN helps you wind down after a long night, while CBC keeps the mood light.

Carolindica Delta-8 Hot Chocolate

Cool weather calls for cocoa, and Carolindica’s Delta-8 Hot Chocolate might be the coziest way to enjoy a high. Each packet includes 50 mg of Delta-8 THC, or if you prefer something lighter, there’s a 10 mg Delta-9 THC + 20 mg CBD version. The mix dissolves easily in milk or oat milk and hits in about 45 minutes. Expect a warm body buzz that feels as comforting as the drink itself. It’s great for a horror movie marathon night.

Coast Cannabis Co. Cookies & Scream Bar

The limited-edition Cookies & Scream bar from Coast is pure Halloween indulgence. Think smooth organic white chocolate layered with crispy wafer cookies and splattered with red cocoa for dramatic flair. The bar contains 100 mg of full-spectrum THC, split into twenty 5 mg pieces so you can control your dose. Made in small batches with organic ingredients, it’s a rich but not overwhelming treat that looks spooky but tastes sophisticated.

DaySavers Smoke Temple Halloween Bundle

If you love a little ritual with your smoke, DaySavers’ Smoke Temple bundle makes every session feel like an event. Inside you’ll find a 1 g mini cross-cone and a 3 g original cross-cone, plus a Halloween-themed tray, packing stick, and ashtray. The cones are made from unbleached, slow-burning paper for an even burn. The 3-gram size is perfect for group sessions or when you’re feeling bold.

High on Plants Neon Orange Leaf Earrings

These bright orange earrings from High on Plants are proof that cannabis-inspired fashion can be high-end. Lazser cut from Italian leather and hand-finished with silver hooks, they’re light and comfortable and perfect for showing your love for weed. Whether you’re heading to a Halloween party or just want to show your plant pride in style, these make the perfect finishing touch.

HØJ Klip Grinder by VITAE Glass

Think of the Klip grinder from HØJ as more of a precision tool than an accessory. Instead of grinding your flower into dust, it uses sharp, suspended blades to slice through it, keeping the trichomes intact and the aroma full. The magnetic design clicks together smoothly, and the anodized aluminum body has a solid, balanced weight that feels good in the hand. Cleanup is quick, and the cut is always consistent. It’s a smart design built for smokers who appreciate good engineering but don’t want their gear to overcomplicate the rolling ritual.

Juāna Bergamot Sativa Uplift Candle

Juāna’s Bergamot Sativa Uplift candle sets the mood for a relaxed session or helps clear the air afterward. It’s made with vegan coco-apricot wax and a clean cotton wick, giving it a long, even burn. The scent combines citrus and soft herbal notes for a refreshing, energizing vibe, like a morning sativa in candle form. There’s no THC here, but the atmosphere it creates is just as mellow. Simple, sustainable and elegant, you’ll burn this candle long after Halloween ends.

Skyworld Cannabis Stay Puft Flower

Skyworld’s Stay Puft is the kind of strain that turns a haunted house into a happy one. This hybrid sits at 28.38% THC, with 1.5% CBG and 2.44% terpenes dominated by β-Myrcene and Limonene. Named after the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from the Ghostbusters franchise, this flower smells like toasted marshmallow with a hint of grape and hits smooth and a high that’s relaxing without being heavy; half a gram is enough to ease tension and keep your focus soft. This sweet, balanced high is perfect for creative nights or lazy afternoons when you just want to float.

Smokiez Green Apple Fruit Chews & Infused Apple Cider

Smokiez brings a fresh crunch to Halloweed with their Green Apple and Sour Green Apple Fruit Chews. Both flavors capture that tart, juicy bite of fall apples and come in two formulations: a 1:1 THC/CBG blend (100 mg THC / 100 mg CBG per pack) and a Hybrid version (100 mg THC total). Each chewy bite delivers a balanced lift — enough to boost your mood without stealing your clarity. The texture is soft, the flavor bright, and the effect smooth and social.

If you want to get creative, you can make an infused apple cider that uses the chews as the base. Melt one into warm cider, and you’ll have a cozy, lightly dosed drink that’s perfect for sweater weather.

WYNK Cran Blood Orange THC Seltzer

If you’d rather sip your cannabis than smoke it, WYNK Cran Blood Orange is the drink for you. Each 12-ounce can has 5 mg THC and 5 mg CBD, creating a gentle, balanced buzz that kicks in within 15 minutes. The tart cranberry and citrus flavor feels refreshing, not sugary, and it’s light enough to enjoy more than one. With zero sugar and no hangover, it’s the perfect option for social smokers or anyone who wants a subtle lift at the Halloween party.

Dear Dabby: How To Take a Proper Dose of Cannabis

What is the right dosage for an edible?  — Indy Gestion

I wish I knew. Everyone is different. Body weight, personal tolerance levels, how much you’ve had to eat beforehand, all kinds of things factor into how an edible will make you feel. Anecdotal experience shows me that 10 mgs of THC per 100 pounds of person is a good rule of thumb. One way to get an idea of your ideal dosage without going too far is to get some of those “microdose” candies that are usually about 5 mgs of THC apiece, eat a few and keep track of how you feel. This should give you a good idea of what you can handle. Have fun.

I often get migraines the day after taking edibles. Is this unusual? — Brianne Payne

Not really unusual. You are most likely dehydrated. People don’t talk about it much, but it is possible to have a sort of “hangover” after ingesting a bunch of pot. Think about the cottonmouth you get after smoking a joint. Now think about how much more THC is in an edible. Boom. Problem solved. Drink way more water next time. If you still get headaches, lay off the edibles. Good talk.

High Ngaio, I have been smoking weed on the daily for a long time. I just don’t get as high as I used to get. What should I do? —Tommy Tolerance

You have two choices: Start smoking a bunch of hash, or just quit smoking weed for a while. Hash will get you hella high, but eventually, you will also develop a tolerance to hash as well, and hash gets expensive. Just take a “tolerance break”: Stop smoking for like a week or two. You may feel weird at first, but you will have vivid dreams and a little extra money. After two weeks, smoke a bowl and see if you don’t get higher than you’ve been in a while.

Where are edibles made? I’m asking specifically about chocolate bars, cookies, brownies, et al. that are sold at medical cannabis dispensaries. Are they made in commercially licensed kitchens? Do local health departments approve? What’s the law? What assurances do we have that medical cannabis food products are prepared with attention to food-safety standards?  — Alkali Hank

Good question. Back in the day, most commercially sold edibles were made in someone’s home. These days, commercial kitchens pump out most of what you find in the clubs. Fortunately, there have been no known instances of someone getting food poisoning from an edible bought at a dispensary, although I am sure some people have gotten uncomfortably high.

If you are asking me this question because you want to make cannabis-infused foods to sell, remember: You aren’t making a batch of cookies for friends. You’re making food for people with a variety of illnesses, and some people may have weakened immune systems, so you need to be as clean as you can possibly be. The biggest challenge is making sure the product is consistent. The guidelines from the San Francisco Department of Public Health are a good place to start.

Perhaps we should discuss the dangers of ingesting cannabis instead of smoking it. When you eat marijuana-infused foods, the THC is metabolized by the liver instead of the bloodstream, leading to stronger, longer-lasting effects. People need to be careful. Three years ago, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd wrote about a bad adventure she had with some cannabis-infused chocolates. Turns out she ate a 16-dose piece of chocolate. No bueno. But here is the best part: She didn’t die. No one has died purely from eating too much marijuana, although they may feel like they might. Too much booze can kill you. Too much weed just makes you feel weird. So there’s that.

What we need to do is learn to be careful with the weed products.  Err on the side of caution, people. If you are unused to marijuana, perhaps you should start with a 5 or 10 mg candy before eating a 16-dose brownie. Likewise, the people that work at the recreational cannabis stores should work very hard to make sure the noobies know just how strong a particular edible is. Like Alyssa Rosenberg points out in a nice column for the Washington Post, it’s going to take a little bit of trial and error for us to get it dialed in. Enjoy your adventures.

THC-Infused Cream Caramel Pumpkin Pie

Thanksgiving is one of my most cherished holidays in American culture. It is a harvest festival where the appreciation of family, friends, blessings, emotional wealth and material wealth take center stage. The worlds slows down momentarily for one night where you are surrounded by loved ones and are able to give thanks for all your blessings and successes freely. It is a time for nourishing food that warms the soul and fills the belly.

So what could possibly make this day even better? The answer would be making a delightful and elegantly medicated Cream Caramel Spiced Pumpkin Pie. The wonderful thing about this recipe is that the Cream Caramel strain pairs beautifully with the pungent spices and sweet custard that make up a pumpkin pie. This superb dessert will enhance your Thanksgiving Day experience and will be something you will want to repeat for the years to come.

Mise en Place:

9 inch pie tin
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 stick chilled sweet butter
4 tablespoons ice water
1 teaspoon cane sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups canned pureed pumpkin
1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 whole eggs
1/2 stick sweet butter infused with Cream Caramel
1 teaspoon maple extract
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground allspice with ½ teaspoon in reserve
1 teaspoon ground ginger

Directions for Pie Crust:

Step 1: For this recipe, you need to start the dough the night before or one hour before cooking time for the crust to set properly. In a bowl combine 1 ¼ cups all purpose flour, cane sugar and salt.

Step 2: With a knife, cut the stick of butter into 8 slices and drop into the bowl. Mix by hand until the butter starts to meld with the dry mix. Add in 4 tablespoons of ice water and continue to combine until the mixture is fully incorporated.

Step 3: Roll into a semi-flat circle, about 6-8 inches wide, and then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight or for one hour prior to cooking time.

Step 4: When the dough is properly chilled and you are ready to bake, roll out the dough onto a floured surface and transfer to your 9 inch pie tin. Flatten the dough into the tin and pinch the edges to form a crust on the top. Take a fork and pierce little holes throughout the bottom and sides of the crust. This prevents the crust from bubbling out during the baking process.

Directions for Filling:

Step 5: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix the 2 cups pureed pumpkin, condensed milk, 2 whole eggs, Cream Caramel cannabutter, maple extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and ginger until fully combined.

Step 6: Pour your pumpkin mixture into your pie crust and lightly tap the pan against a counter to release any air bubbles. Take the 1/2 teaspoon reserve of allspice and lightly sprinkle the entire top of the pie.

Step 7: Put the pie into the oven and bake for 55 minutes. Pull from oven and let the pie set at room temperature. Slice into 8 servings.  Decorate with fresh whipped cream and serve al la mode for the most comforting holiday dessert. Enjoy!

Dosage:

If a gram of flower tests at 18 percent THC, eighteen percent of 1,000 mg would be 180 mg, so your entire pie would have 180 mg of THC in it. To figure out your dosing, sub the number of your THC percentage in the amount of flower you want and do the math to determine how potent you want your pie. If you want a smaller dose, cut the flower down to a smaller portion.

Strain Suggestions:

I would recommend strains that possess caramel, syrupy, earthy, sandalwood or spice terpenes and flavonoids. The following would be ideal if you didn’t have Caramel Cream: Maple Leaf, Vanilla Kush, Spice or Hashplant. If you cannot find these strains, don’t panic, just follow your nose and taste buds to finds strains that would complement the dish.

Sugar and Flour-Free, No Bake “Sugar Babe” Oatmeal Cookies

This is a simple recipe that omits baking time, flour, white sugar and brown sugar which can be found in traditional oatmeal raisin cookie recipes. The floral and overly sweet Sugar Babe strain adds a dimension of taste to this cookie that keeps your mouth wanting more. This is the perfect oatmeal raisin cookie to satisfy your sweet tooth and will come with a little less guilt.

Mise en place:

• 10 golden dates

• 3/4 cup rolled oats that have been submerged in water overnight and then drained

• 3/4 cup almonds

• 3/4 cup cashews

• 1/2 cup raisins

• 2 tablespoons Sugar Babe cannabutter

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Step 1: In a food processor, add the almonds and cashews, then blend until it forms a moist crumbly mixture.

Step 2: Add the oats, butter, cinnamon and vanilla extract, then process again until well combined. Dice the golden dates and add them to the food processor. Process until the entire mixture becomes uniform and well blended. This mixture will be very sticky like cookie dough when you are finished processing.

Step 3: Add the raisins into the dough mixture and gently fold them into the dough with a spoon until evenly distributed.

Step 4: Divide the dough into 10 cookies. Gently pat each divided dough section with your hands and shape into a cookie.

Step 5: Place this cookie on a lined sheet pan with parchment paper and place in the fridge for 25 minutes or until set. Keep refrigerated to store and pull the cookies out as needed. Enjoy!

Dosage:

If Sugar Babe THC content tests around 15 percent, 15 percent of 1,000 mg would be 150 mg. Sub the number of your THC percentage and do the math to figure out your desired dosage per tablespoon for your cannabutter. Then take the dosage per two tablespoons and divide it by 10 cookies to get your milligram dosage per serving.

Strain Substitution:

I would recommend any strains whose terpenes match the sweet, syrupy, floral taste of Sugar Babe. Vanilla Kush and Cotton Candy would be excellent choices. Be creative, follow your nose/taste buds, and have fun with it!

Perfect Picks for Summer Picnics & Potlucks

By: K. Astre

Summertime is here which means it’s a good idea to get outside and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. Picnics are a fun way to get all your friends together to spend time soaking up the warm weather while eating and drinking delicious stuff that everyone has brought to share with one another. The key to good picnic food is something that easy to transport, not very messy to eat and something that tastes good even after sitting heat for a little bit (except for drinks and things that will make it in a cooler). For some people, the easy way out is to grab a bag of chips or pre-cut fruit from the store but instead of doing that, you can be the person that brings something homemade that steals the show.

Check out some of these ideas for things you can make to bring to a picnic, potluck or social occasion where bringing edible to share is appreciated.

Pot Popsicles

Cannabis-infused honey is the star in this pot popsicle that incorporates fresh fruit and lemonade for a tasty way to beat the heat. You can follow the recipe or come up with some of your own creations using juice or coconut water for the base with whatever fruits you like. Just make sure you throw these bad boys in the cooler so they don’t melt before everyone can eat them.

Kief Fried Chicken

A sprinkle of kief and chili powder gives this chicken a kick of heat and a bit of a buzz. It’s a good way to add something substantial to the fray that will help fill everyone up and make the picnic feel more like a meal and less like a snack sesh. Though the recipe calls for boneless chicken strips, you can easily swap those out for party wings if you prefer and add BBQ or teriyaki sauce to take them to the next level.

Cannabis Mocktails

If herbs are your thing, you’ll be into these three refreshing mocktails that use cannabis-infused lemon simple syrup. Try making a rosemary, cucumber and cannabis-infused ginger beer, a cannabis-infused mojito or a Thai basil and lime cocktail to help keep everyone cool. The drinks usually take about 10-20 minutes to set in with the peak hitting about 45-90 minutes in, so try to make sure everyone paces themselves so they don’t overdo it.

Melted Brie & Infused Apple Butter Baguette

If you’re looking for something quick to bring that looks like you at least tried a little, this is it. It’s kind of like a fancy grilled cheese for adults and you only need four ingredients to pull it off. If you’re not feeling this combination, you can experiment with your own duos to get the perfect sweet-savory mix.

BLT & THC Sandwich

Chances are that you already have most, if not all, of these ingredients in your kitchen and ready to go if you need something quick and convenient to make. All you’ll need to do is spread some canna-butter onto the bread you’re using for the sandwich and prepare it as you normally would. It might be a good idea to skip the mayo (or bring some on the side) if it’s going to be sitting out in the sun just to make sure everything stays fresh.

Cookies

A good batch of cookies can go a long way. Especially if everyone only needs just one. You can make your personal favorite or try out chewy vegan chocolate chip cookiesno bake oatmeal cookies or lavender sugar cookies depending on your mood. Just make sure you use a sweet strain that pairs well with a dessert.

Roasted Green Chile Salsa & Super Lemon Haze Guacamole

These two dips are easy to make and will be the perfect accompaniment to the chips someone else will inevitably bring. The creamy guacamole helps balance the spicy salsa and gives people options depending on how much heat they can handle in their food. If you can, try garnishing the dips with a fresh cannabis leaf to make it look pretty.

Canna Quinoa Salad

Although a green salad sounds light and refreshing on a hot day, you run the risk of having wilted, soggy leaves when it’s time to eat. Instead, swap it out for a quinoa salad with some veggies that will still be good even in the heat. Stick to the recipe or get creative and add more veggies, different herbs or put your own spin on the light, lemony dressing.
