MS, 메타버스 전략 축소로 ‘메시’ 앱 지원 종료···팀즈 몰입형 이벤트 기능 출시

MS는 코로나19 팬데믹 당시, 업무에 가상 현실과 몰입형 환경을 적용하는 데 관심이 높아지자 메시를 출시했다. 메시는 유니티 기반으로 3D 환경을 제작할 수 있는 플랫폼이자, 동료가 몰입형 공간에서 아바타로 만나 협업할 수 있는 전용 앱 형태로 제공돼 왔다.

그러나 시장 수요는 좀처럼 형성되지 않았다. MS는 지난 1일 메시 앱 제공을 중단한다고 밝혔다. 이에 따라 PC나 메타의 퀘스트 가상현실 헤드셋에서 메시 앱을 이용한 이벤트 참석이나 팀즈 회의 참여가 더 이상 불가능해졌으며, 웹사이트 역시 폐쇄될 예정이다.

이번 조치는 MS가 메타버스 관련 도구에서 손을 떼고 있음을 보여주는 또 하나의 신호다. 또한 MS는 혼합 현실 헤드셋 ‘홀로렌즈’와 관련해 미국 육군과 약 22억 달러 규모의 계약을 체결하기도 했지만 지난해 생산을 중단한 바 있다.

MS는 이날 팀즈 협업 앱에 적용해 온 메시 기반 3D 몰입형 경험에도 변경 사항을 적용한다고 밝혔다. 팀즈에서 소규모 그룹이 아바타로 만나 상호작용할 수 있었던 ‘몰입형 공간(3D)’ 기능을 애플리케이션에서 제거한다는 설명이다.

대신 팀즈 사용자가 교육 세션, 가상 전시회, 제품 소개 등 대규모 가상 모임을 주최하거나 참석할 수 있는 ‘팀즈 몰입형 이벤트’ 기능이 공개됐다. 행사는 아웃룩 또는 팀즈 캘린더에서 예약할 수 있으며, 기업 브랜드에 최적화된 환경이나 업로드한 3D 모델로 자유롭게 사전 구축할 수 있다.

몰입형 이벤트는 PC, 맥, 메타 퀘스트 기기에서 이용 가능하다. 이 기능을 주최하려면 팀즈 프리미엄 또는 적합한 팀즈 라이선스가 필요하지만, 공동 주최자와 참석자는 일반 팀즈 라이선스만으로 참여할 수 있다.

메타버스 개념이 시장 전반에서 큰 반향을 일으키지는 못했지만, 일부 기업은 여전히 가상 환경이 원격 협업을 강화할 가능성에 주목하고 있다.

메트리지(Metrigy)의 사장이자 수석 애널리스트인 어윈 라자는, 별도 앱이 아닌 팀즈 내부에서 기업이 직접 가상 이벤트를 개최할 수 있도록 한 MS의 이번 변화가 합리적이라고 평가했다. 다만 앞으로 가상 협업 환경에 대한 수요는 제한적인 범위에 그칠 것으로 전망했다.

메트리지 조사에 따르면 가상현실과 증강현실 도입은 ‘느리지만 꾸준한’ 증가세를 보이고 있으며, 2024년 말 조사한 약 400개 기업 가운데 16.5%가 올해 말까지 해당 기술에 투자할 계획이라고 답했다.

라자는 “사용례는 일반적인 회의보다 교육, 제품 시연, 엔지니어링과 디자인, 고객 참여처럼 목적이 뚜렷한 영역에 집중되는 경향이 있다. 성장은 느리지만 이어질 것으로 예상되지만, 이러한 가상현실 도구가 앞으로 주류 시장을 넘어서는 수준으로 확대될 것으로 보이지는 않는다”라고 말했다.

애플, 고가 헤드셋으로 확장현실 기업 수요 노린다

구글은 자사의 첫 증강현실 시도였던 구글 글래스를 공식적으로 중단했다. 다만, 대중적으로는 실패한 제품으로 여겨졌음에도, 두 해 전까지만 해도 여전히 기업용 모델로 판매되고 있었다.

마이크로소프트도 마찬가지로 홀로렌즈를 기업 중심으로 방향 전환했다가 결국은 완전히 취소했다.

반면, 애플은 고가의 비전 프로 헤드셋으로 처음부터 기업 시장을 공략해 왔다. 첫 공개 이후 열린 WWDC에서는 비전 운영체제 전용 세션을 마련했고, 플랫폼의 첫 번째 주요 업데이트에서는 모바일 기기 관리 기능도 도입했다.

이러한 전략은 당연한 수순으로 볼 수 있다. 확장현실 기기는 가격과 활용 방식 모두에서 기업 시장에 적합하다고 여겨지고 있으며, 가상현실 시장은 성공을 좌우하는 핵심 요소로 인식되고 있다.

다만, 3,499달러에 달하는 애플 비전 프로는 모든 기업에 적합하지 않을 수도 있다. 필요하더라도 모든 직원을 대상으로 한 제품은 아니다. 그러나 제품 설계, 시제품 제작, 데이터 시각화, 교육, 산업 현장 활용, 의료 시술, 특정 고객 응대 분야 등에서 실질적인 효과를 낼 수 있는 영역은 분명 존재한다.

이러한 가치를 실현하려면, 일반적인 기술 도입보다 기업 정보기술 부서가 더 세밀하게 접근해야 하는데, 불가능한 과제는 아니다. 비전 프로를 기업용 기기로 고려할 때의 접근 방식과 도입 전 검토해야 할 요소를 살펴보자.

비전 프로, 단순 전시용 기기 아냐

가장 먼저 넘어야 할 큰 과제는 공간 컴퓨팅 기술을 업무용으로 인식하게 만드는 것이다. 여기에는 사용자가 얼굴에 장착한 컴퓨터에 익숙해지는 것뿐 아니라, 사무실에서 누군가 해당 기기를 착용한 모습을 자연스럽게 받아들이는 것까지 포함된다. 더 중요한 것은 비전 프로를 단순한 고가 전자 기기가 아닌 업무 도구로 인식하는 것이다. 그러려면 비전 프로가 실질적으로 회사에 기여하는 가치를 입증해야 하며, 사용자도 그 가치를 이해해야 한다.

따라서 비전 프로를 정보기술 도구로 도입하려면, 왜 이 장비가 최적의 해결책인지 사용자에게 충분히 설명해야 한다.

명확한 목표와 기대 성과 설정

비전 운영체제 기반 애플리케이션과 워크플로를 구축할 때는 명확한 전략이 필요하다. 따라서 비전 프로를 직원용으로 도입하려는 기업은 구체적인 목표와 성과 측정 방식을 사전에 설정해야 한다.

어떤 사례에 해당하든, 기업은 기존 컴퓨팅 도구보다 공간 컴퓨팅이 어떤 이점을 제공하는지를 명확히 해야 한다. 특히 고가의 하드웨어가 수반되는 만큼 그 필요성은 더 강조되어야 한다.

사용자와 긴밀히 협력하라

비전 프로의 성공적인 정착은 기기를 직접 사용하는 직원, 팀 리더, 관리자와의 협력에 달려 있다. 기술을 먼저 요구한 쪽이 직원이든, 정보책임자든 상관없이, 모든 이해관계자가 자신의 업무가 무엇이며 이 플랫폼이 어떻게 이를 지원할 수 있는지를 함께 논의해야 한다.

특히 도입 초기 단계에는 정기적인 점검 일정을 마련하고, 피드백 수집 방식(소프트웨어나 대면 보고 포함)도 명확히 해야 한다. 무엇보다 중요한 것은 사용자 피드백을 반영해 실제 개선 조치로 연결하는 것이다.

브라우저도 대안

어떤 기기든 핵심 가치는 하드웨어 자체보다 실행되는 소프트웨어에서 나온다. 애플리케이션은 공개 앱이 될 수도 있고, 기업 전용 내부 앱일 수도 있다. 일반적으로는 이 둘을 혼합해 사용하는 경우가 많다.

셰어플레이는 비전 운영체제에서 가장 강력한 협업 기능 중 하나로, 제품 개발이나 엔지니어링 부서의 원격 협업 플랫폼으로 매우 유용하다.

여러 사용자가 동일한 가상 공간에서 하나의 워크플로·업무·앱을 실시간으로 함께 사용하며 콘텐츠를 보고 수정할 수 있다. 이러한 기능은 현장 또는 원격 협업을 모두 가능하게 한다.

비용이 부담된다면 팀당 한 대의 기기만 배정해도 충분하다. 직접 기기를 사용해본 지원 담당자는 문제를 빠르게 재현하고 해결할 수 있는 역량이 높아진다.

끊임없는 변화에 대비하라

혼합현실 기술은 인공지능 다음으로 변화 속도가 빠른 기술 분야다. 메타, 안드로이드 기반 확장현실 생태계도 비전 프로와 경쟁하기 위해 적극적으로 움직이고 있다. 시장은 여전히 유동적이며, 애플과 직접 관련 없는 뉴스라도 비전 운영체제의 향후 기획에 참고가 될 수 있다.

Vision Pro M5 review: It’s time for Apple to make some tough choices

With the recent releases of visionOS 26 and newly refreshed Vision Pro hardware, it’s an ideal time to check in on Apple’s Vision Pro headset—a device I was simultaneously amazed and disappointed by when it launched in early 2024.

I still like the Vision Pro, but I can tell it’s hanging on by a thread. Content is light, developer support is tepid, and while Apple has taken action to improve both, it’s not enough, and I’m concerned it might be too late.

When I got a Vision Pro, I used it a lot: I watched movies on planes and in hotel rooms, I walked around my house placing application windows and testing out weird new ways of working. I tried all the neat games and educational apps, and I watched all the immersive videos I could get ahold of. I even tried my hand at developing my own applications for it.

The Engineering Behind Valve’s new VR Headset

Valve’s new Steam Frame is what all the well-connected YouTubers are talking about, but most of them are talking about what it’s like to game on it. That’s great content if you’re into it, but not exactly fodder for Hackaday — with one exception. [Gamers Nexus] gives us a half hour of relatively-unedited footage of them just chatting with the engineers behind the hardware.

It’s great stuff right from the get-go: they start with how thermal management drove the PCB design, and put the SoC on the “back” of the chip, sandwiched betwixt heat pipes. We don’t usually think of taking heat through the PCB when building a board, so it’s a neat detail to learn about before these things get into the hands of the usual suspects who will doubtless give us teardown videos in a few months.

From there wanders to power delivery — getting the voltage regulators packaged properly was a challenge, since impedance requirements meant a very tight layout. Anyone who has worked on this kind of SBC might be familiar with that issue, but for those looking in from the outside, it’s a fascinating glimpse at electrical sausage being made. That’s just the first half.

The heat-regulation conversation is partially repeated the next conversation (which seems to have happened first) where they get into the cooling requirements of the LCD screens. This requires less than you might think, as they like to run warm for fast refresh. It’s really more about keeping your face cool. They also they discuss acoustic vibration — you don’t want your integrated audio shaking your IMUs apart — and why the prototype was being blasted with freakin’ laser beams to monitor it.

If you haven’t seen or read any other coverage on the Steam Frame, you’re going to miss some context here, but if you’ve not hid under a rock for that announcement, this is amazing detail to have. We’re hugely impressed that Valve let their engineers out of their cubicle-cave to talk to media.

Sure, it’s not an open-source VR headset, but compared to the deafening silence coming from the likes of Meta, this level of information is still awesome to have.

We started seeing more color, 3D effects, and first person shooter games.  Gaming companies invented more and more gaming devices that immersed the user in the gaming experience.  While futuristic gaming is now in our midst, 80’s and 90’s classics will always be popular amongst many old school gamers.  20 years from now, videogame titles newest ps4 games will also be sought after by nostalgic gamers. PS4 arcade sticks, for example, are technologies still in use today that bring back 80s-90s gaming nostalgia.

Virtual reality headsets can now also incorporate your mobile phone as a viewing screen and can be used for many applications.

The creation of the famous Oculus Rift has created a market of new virtual reality gadgets that are coming out for a much lower cost. The VR BOX 2.0 reality headset is extremely affordable and very powerful. It costs less than $15!  Yes, $15, we didn’t miss a zero. It even comes with a Bluetooth 3.0 Remote Controller. It provides a great virtual reality experience for those who already own a smartphone and don’t want to spend $500 to $600 on their virtual reality headset.

Made up from 43 precision parts, the reason its so cheap is because it is now being made in China. There are some even cheaper models but their quality wasn’t good enough. This particular model though is really nice and adaptable. You can use any smartphone from 3.5 inches to 6 inches [covers almost all the smartphone market], adjust the lenses and its a comfortable, snug fit.

Boom in Gaming Devices

As the LCD market boomed, so did the devices that use them.  This has enabled gaming to span across mobile devices, phones, tablets, and more.  Gaming platforms have incorporated touchscreen LCDs in their gaming devices to enhance the user experience.

Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality gaming brings you all the bells and whistles on top of everything.  Smartphones and other gaming devices enable interactive features that allow gamers to interact in real-time.  Eventually, augmented reality gaming sessions may enable gamers to be independent of gaming consoles and devices, making the game as real as being on the gaming grounds and in the gaming realm.

Cloud Gaming

As mobile devices continue to spread, and as Internet connections continue to advance and improve, so will the availability of gaming on the cloud.  As software companies are now migrating and offering their software and services on the cloud, so are gaming companies with their games.  The aim for gaming industries is to make games as easy to access as music and streaming movies.  Many smart TVs now offer this technology as part of their smart TV software.

Here are some tips on finding the right setup.

1080P Total High Definition

Input lag is amount of time it takes for a projector (or TV, monitor) to create an image. Long input lag can make a movie have bad lip-sync issues and can turn a competitive multi player match into a frustrating experience.  You want lag times to be as low as possible, considering you may also run into lag times with the server.  Your equipment should operate without any issue.  Look for a projector today that offerd sub 20ms lag times.

Refresh Rates

Refresh rate is a projector’s ability to process video. A faster (higher) refresh rate means crisper, more seamless looking images. Anything over 120hz is recommended.  Higher refresh rates also produce a 3D image that is easier on the eyes.

Other Tips

Make sure your input resolution always matches the display resolution. Any scaling done on the projector will introduce a bit of lag.

Check to see if your projector has a ‘gaming’ or ‘fast’ mode. This typically reduces image quality by a small amount, but can also shave dozens of ms of lag time.

Connect to the projector directly  from your game console. In a lot of home theater setups, the console/pc may run through a home theater receiver first, which introduces one more thing the signal has to travel through before reaching the final display. The best and fastest route is also the shortest.
