This is simply because it does the most “privacy protecting”, with the least required efforts. In most cases, it only needs a “single click”.

So, a VPN stands for “Virtual Private Network”. Sounds complicated, actually is pretty simple.

It’s just a software which acts as a mediator between you, and the rest of the internet. Meaning, when you use a VPN, it gives your entire device a new IP address and encrypts your connection.

So, everything else you do after connecting to a VPN has this new IP address.

Why is it a big deal? Your IP address is how “you” are recognized on the internet. It’s how your ISP knows who you are, the govt. knows who you are, and the websites you visit know who you are.

In other words, by changing your IP address, you become invisible. You can access any website, do anything and no one knows it’s “you”.

Additionally, by changing your IP address, you unlock access to blocked content. Almost everything on the internet is blocked using “IP addresses”. This includes websites, streaming content, software access and everything else.

By changing your IP address, you can now access everything that was blocked.

Now, if there ever was an inspection, there’s no way  the govt./third-parties can connect your activities on the web, to you.

Obviously, you can’t trust all VPNs. A lot of VPNs have been found lying about their “we do not keep a log” policy.

As a result, I’ll suggest go with NordVPN. It’s publicly and independently audited to not keep logs. It’s also not a part of the invasive five-eye group.

Tor Browser

Tor browser is a web browser as the name may suggest. However, it’s one of the best privacy protection apps on the planet. It’s open-source and volunteer-run for starters.

It too primarily “changes your IP address”. This is done as Tor browser doesn’t just take your browser request and sends it off to websites.

Rather, it sends your request first to various “nodes”. These nodes aren’t controlled by any government, not even Tor controls them. These are completely volunteer-run, even you can become a node if you want to.

Also, not even these nodes know your real IP address. Each node only knows its previous, and succeeding node, not the full circuit. So, the final node never knows your real IP address, or even the first node you connected to.

Tor is primarily used to browse .onion websites (and the dark web). This tells you it’s definitely more secure than your everyday browser.

Tip: Unfortunately, Tor isn’t secure “enough”. It does have a past where it was hijacked by the FBI. Hence, it’s best if you use it combined with a VPN. That would make it bulletproof.

Telegram

I’m sure most of you reading this use Whatsapp. While it’s “end to end encrypted”, it still is owned by Facebook. Facebook has a controversial history when it comes to privacy protection, wouldn’t you agree?

Although, everyone needs an instant messenger like Whatsapp in their lives.

Enter Telegram. It offers what Whatsapp does, and then some. It’s a lot more secure and private than Whatsapp.

For starters, users can choose to use an “username” instead of a number. You can share this with others to communicate and they never have to know your number.

Then, it too is end-to-end encrypted (it has these “secret chat” feature for this). However, what’s special is its “delete anything anytime” feature.

You can delete messages from both the devices at any time, permanently, without leaving a trace. There’s no “message deleted” prompt like what shows up on Whatsapp.

You can even send “self-destruct” messages.

Skiff Mail

Almost every single one of you on this piece have used Gmail at some point in your life, and probably still do.

Well, Gmail is extremely unsecure. In fact, it was caught “reading” user e-mails. And I do not mean just the metadata, I mean the actual contents of the emails. (Not surprisingly, I can’t find the actual news article anywhere now! I’ve linked to the article in some of my previous pieces. Given how Google almost controls the entire Internet, that’s expected!).

This is why you need an end-to-end encrypted email solution.

Skiff Mail is one such solution. Unlike Gmail, Skiff Mail doesn’t require your personal information while signing up either.

Other privacy protecting e-mail providers

Additionally, you can also use Protonmail or Tutanota. These too are E2E encrypted, 100% free, and require no personal information for sign up.

Cloud storage

One of the most immediate privacy app switches you should make? Your cloud storage solution.

You store everything on there, don’t you? Your personal life, private life and sometimes even secret life.

Using Google Drive, or anything else that’s controlled by big tech or is based one of those “not so private countries” isn’t a good idea.

Instead, you should use something that’s E2E encrypted, is based in a privacy-friendly nation and isn’t controlled by one of those big companies.

Sync is a good place to start. It brings in advanced collaboration & sharing features. Versioning, user-based permissions, remote wipe and a lot more. .

Proxy Apps

I like to call these the little cousins to VPNs. That’s because these too change your IP address.

However, they do not “encrypt” your connection like VPNs do. Also, they’re app-specific, they do not protect your “overall device” like VPNs.

Proxy connections also drop more frequently as compared to a VPN. A good VPN connection has an uptime of 99%+ which is almost impossible with a proxy server!

Google Chrome and Google the search engine are the farthest thing from privacy. The same is true for Yahoo, Bing and other traditional search engines.

This is why you need a search engine that “doesn’t” profile or fingerprint you.

DuckDuckGo is one such search engine. It’s a very strong Google alternative with a massive database.

As for the browser, switching to Brave is a good idea. It looks and feels exactly like Google Chrome, minus the privacy invasions.

I can keep listing apps forever, for everything that breaches your privacy, there’s a privacy-respecting alternative.

However, if you look for certain key points, you can pretty much find them yourselves.

• Open-source is the best: Always look for applications which are open-source. This would mean the company can not hide backdoors and other loopholes into its code.
• End-to-End encrypted: For any communication tool, only use E2E encrypted apps. This would make sure that the company, govt. or any other third-party can’t snoop in on your conversations.
• Free isn’t always the best: When it comes to your privacy, it’s okay to shell a few bucks rather than letting your “data” be the price you pay.
• Jurisdiction: It’s important to know who controls the app you’re using. If it’s based in any of the “five-eye” nations, it’s probably not the best choice. Obviously, this isn’t absolute. If the app is encrypted, anonymous and satisfies other privacy conditions, the jurisdiction can be accepted.

The list of all the privacy protection apps on the planet would probably be never ending. However, the following are the best in terms of quality, pricing and features:

In other words, your privacy is non-existent. We’ve come to accept it because it provides “better search results and ads”. However, if you aren’t okay with that, you need these privacy search engines.

These search engines do not save your search history, or your web activity. They do not “profile” you. No trackers are attached to your search activity or devices either.

It doesn’t use any trackers or digital fingerprints to identify you, or your searches. It doesn’t even save your search history. As a result, your search results aren’t based on which links you’ve previously clicked or which site you liked more.

Location, age, interests and everything else that most other search engines hoard? DuckDuckGo doesn’t.

It’s different even from most other privacy search engines. That’s because it doesn’t use Google’s site index to show results and rather has its own.

It blocks the malicious/tracker-based ads. Do note that ads still exist, however, they’re based on generic searches. You see ads for what you search for, not what you “may like” as with other search engines.

The interface is almost identical to Google. You can search for images, news, maps, and videos. Even rich snippets exist!

It’s also available as a browser extension, and native apps for Android and iOS. The apps offer even more features such as better encryption, email protection.

It’s one of the very few privacy search engines on this list which has its own index. This means it doesn’t rely on Google, Bing, Yahoo or others for its search results.

It doesn’t store any data either. No search histories mean no user “profiles” are created.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) it doesn’t index any adult content. It’s great if you wish to introduce a search engine to your children.

There’s this “preview” option which lets you preview the site without actually visiting it!

Additionally, you can also install a browser extension for an even better and smoother experience.

The interface is similar to Google but not identical. It’s also capable of searching for images, videos, and even music.

Its a full anonymity suite if you  want it to be. They offer an anonymous messenger “Teleguard’ that’s like Whatsapp minus all its tracking and identification capabilities, an anonymous e-mail client, and even a VPN.

Yacy.net

Yacy is different from most other privacy search engines you’ll see. It’s a P2P, decentralized search engine.

Let me explain both the terms?  P2P means “people to people”. People act as nodes, letting you search for your queries. These nodes are the “search engine”, collectively. No node is more powerful or privileged than the other node.

Similarly, “Decentralized” means there’s no central entity controlling it all. It doesn’t even use a central server eliminating any and all “single point of control” doubts.

It’s all distributed/spread amongst the people. No one person can prevent or restrict you from searching what you want. No person can record/monitor your activity either.

You can even install Yacy and act as a node yourself. The only problem? You’ll have to install Yacy on your system!

Metager

Metager is a non-profit organization. On top of that, it’s open-source. That means we do not have to blindly trust everything it says, and its claims can be verified independently.

It’s an uncensored search engine. This is possible as it fetches data from multiple search engines and not a  single central source. You can also manually choose which search engines to enable/disable.

It doesn’t track you or your searches. Additionally it uses an anonymizing proxy which makes sure your IP address is masked for these searches. It can be enabled if you click on the “open anonymously” link under each search result.

There’s also a blacklisting feature which lets you exclude domains so they don’t show up in searches.

You can use the Metager plugin to make it your default search engine, even on Google Chrome. There’s also a Metager app that you can download for Android devices.

The interface is slightly different from Google. For starters, it doesn’t use the traditional blue-green colour combination.

It’s capable of showing image results. For each search, it also shows a number of “related searches” you can click on.

SearX

What makes SearX “private”? Well, it doesn’t log your search history. Neither does it share your IP addresses with the engines it’s pulling data from.

The interface is similar to Google in many ways. The blue/green colour combination is used. Then, for relevant keywords, an excerpt from Wikipedia is shown just like on Google.

Similarly, it shows “WikiData” (definitions/ additional data) for your searches when available.

It also gives you the search URL in case you need it for whatever reasons. There’s even a “download results” button which will give you all the displayed URLs in a csv/rss or json file.

It has multiple search modes. On top of normal searches, you can also search for files, maps, music, news, science, social media, videos etc. The “files’ mode is especially helpful when you’re trying to find movies or other downloadable files.

Ecosia

Ecosia is built different. Its primary aim is to “plant trees”. Why then is it on this privacy search engine list?

Well, because it doesn’t trace/track you like all the other options on this list. It anonymizes all your search data within a week. This means, after 7 days, any and all identification data attached to your search (IP address primarily) is stripped off.

No searches are stored permanently either. It doesn’t create personal profiles of its users. No data is stored meaning no data can be sold to third-parties.

It further encrypts your data so that third-party interceptions become hard if not completely impossible. It doesn’t even use third-party trackers on its website so that those third-party tools do not get access to your data.

Finally, whatever little data it does collect (non-identifiable) too can be “turned off” in a single click.

It’s extremely transparent with its earning reports and “planted trees” numbers. It shows how much money they’ve made, and how many trees have been planted.

It too gets its links from multiple sources. You get to manually  choose which search engines to include/exclude from this list.

However, it prevents “search leak”. This means, the websites you visit do not know what you searched for to find them.

Mojeek

Mojeek has all the right keywords you may be looking for. For starters, its tagline says –“No tracking, just search”. That’s a good start, isn’t it?

Then, it lists 3 big reasons why you should use Mojeek. Escaping big tech/ right to privacy / or just looking for different search results. Again, three very solid reasons, two of these even enforce your privacy.

I’ll be honest, it’s no Google when it comes to “index size”. However, this was a personal project which went viral and today has a pretty impressive index of over 5 Billion web pages.

The actual search page interface is almost identical to that of Google. This keeps things simple without you having to re-learn how to search. It does have “Image” and “News” searches as well.

There’s even a 100% free and anonymous feature they added, it’s called “Mojeek Focus”. It basically lets you include/exclude results and customize your search much better without being tracked.

You can also use Mojeek on your website to offer site searches. Ads too can be run.

Closing Words – Best Privacy Search Engines in 2022

Every single search engine I’ve listed will ensure your searches aren’t stored and your data isn’t logged.

If you need the “best”, I’d say start with DuckDuckGo and then move onto Swisscows if you want to. Yacy is extremely anonymous however it requires additional setup.

The other options will let you search without attaching trackers as well. Just make sure you get a VPN if you wish to be truly private and anonymous on these search engines.

Bypass censorship tools: This list will give you tools which will let you bypass censorship on the internet. You will be able to access websites/content blocked by your govt. or any other third-party.

Not just “access”, some of these tools will even offer you anonymity and privacy. No one finds out what you’ve been up to, not even your government (even if they tried to).

Towards the end of this guide, you’ll also find alternatives to popular but censored social media platforms and communication platforms.

All of the listed tools are 100% legal. What you access with these tools of course if your own responsibility.

Let’s start with the basics then?

What are These Bypass Censorship Tools?

As the name suggests, these are tools that let you bypass censorship

In other words, these are applications that let you do what you want, access what you want, without imposing restrictions. They do not try to be your parent and tell you what you can and can’t do.

In current times, very often we see governments and organizations ban access to certain types of sites. These often include:

• Porn
• Online casinos
• Sites the govt. doesn’t agree with
• Even Google/Youtube and Facebook in some countries.
• Social media and other organizations themselves censor some content in specific regions.

These tools will let you access almost everything that’s blocked on the internet, regardless of who blocked it.

How do these censorship Bypass tools work?

Bypassing censorship sure “sounds” like a mammoth task. You’ll be accessing content the government or the host platform doesn’t want you to!

Despite sounding like  a task for Mr. Hacker, it actually only requires a few clicks! Literally. No previous skills, technical expertise or coding required.

Most of these applications simply change your IP address. The IP address is how the destination website or content identifies you. By changing your IP address, you hide your real identity. Your destination website now thinks you’re someone else, someone that content is unlocked for.

In this article, I’ve also listed “alternatives”. E.g. while Youtube, Whatsapp and most other similar giants do wish to control the content posted on their platforms, there are alternatives which do not.

You can use those alternatives to access content that’s censored on these mainstream platforms.

Let’s bypass some censorship then?

1. VPN Services

A good VPN is undoubtedly the best way to bypass censorship online.  The primary reason for this is, a VPN does many things for you, in just a single click.

So, normally what happens is your IP address sends a request to a website to access it. If it’s blocked, the website doesn’t load or you get a notification saying it’s blocked.

With a VPN, you first connect to a VPN. You instantly get a new IP address and your original IP address is hidden.

You can do this in a single click. E.g. in the screenshot below, I’m using NordVPN. Now, I can just click on a country, and instantly my IP is hidden and this new IP comes into effect.

Everything you browse now will be browsed from these IP addresses that your VPN has provided you. The VPN also encrypts your connection so it can’t be hijacked/backtracked to you.

The destination website now doesn’t know who you are, or where you’re from. As a result, you’re treated like a different citizen and hence the content is unlocked for you.

Which VPN to use?

NordVPN is my personal choice for over a dozen reasons.

I’ve used about 30 different VPNs in the past 5 years. No VPN offers the speed or security features that I found with NordVPN.

For starters, Nord “protects” you from your own government. It has a “no log” policy. This policy is independently verified by third-parties. Meaning, even if your govt. forced Nord to reveal your real identity, they can not because they have no logs.

Because it’s based out of Panama, your government can’t force Nord to collect data either. Panama has no such laws.

Then, NordVPN offers Split Tunneling, Onion over VPN, WireGuard, P2P (torrent-friendly) and many other features which most other VPNs don’t. Finally, Nord is one of the cheapest VPNs despite offering all these features. You can read my detailed NordVPN review here.

Just in case you need alternatives, you can go with IPVanish, ExpressVPN, SurfShark as well.

Tip: Never in any case go with a free VPN. There have been multiple instances of VPNs secretly keeping user records, and later sharing it with law enforcement when needed.

Proxies

Proxies are similar to VPN, but aren’t the same.

The similarity is primarily that proxies too hide and change your IP address. This does allow you to access content that you otherwise can not.

However, proxies aren’t encrypted. They’re easier to intercept.

Secondly, proxies often only work for individual browsers/apps. Meaning, any other browser or app that you haven’t separately configured the proxy for, will still use your normal connection.  It won’t be unable to access what you’re trying to.

The VPN on the other hand once enabled routes your entire connection, for all the apps and browsers through your new IP. Advanced VPNs (like NordVPN) even let you manually choose which apps to route though the VPN and which to exclude.

Proxies are also comparatively cheaper than a VPN. However, they may not always offer the “no log” policy that your VPN does. This means, the govt. or any other third-party may trace your real identity if and when required.

Some good proxy services include:

• InstantProxies
• SmartProxy
• ShadowSocks

Tor Browser

Tor Browser is a web browser. However, it totally helps you bypass censorship online. Its core principal resembles heavily to that of a VPN or a proxy server.

You can use it just like you use Mozilla Firefox. The UI is almost identical. However, in the background it’s  completely different story.

So, every website you visit using Tor, is first routed to multiple “nodes”. These nodes are basically volunteers who allow Tor to use their system to route your traffic.

Because multiple nodes are used,  only the first node knows your real IP address. No other node in the entire circuit has any access to your real identity.  Hence, the final website too only sees the IP address of the final node instead of your real IP address.

Tor is free and completely automated, however, it does have a few major drawbacks. For starters, because of all the routing, Tor does reduce your internet speed by quite a margin.

Secondly, Tor isn’t secure. There have been instances where Tor has been hacked (by the Feds) to reveal the actual user’s identity.

Third, Tor is primarily an “Onion” browser. It’s used to access .onion websites. It totally can access clearnet (.com/.net and other websites) as well. However, it messes these sites up, especially those with JavaScript for security reasons.

In a nutshell, Tor sure can be used to bypass censorship but it’s best to use it with a VPN for the best security.

Uncensored alternatives to popular sites

Now, nearly everything you use is owned by 2 major companies.

Alphabet owns:

• Google (The search engine)
• Gmail
• Google Drive
• Youtube
• Sheets/Docs and other Office alternatives
• Google Maps
• Google Meet
• And so many other companies that they literally named their parent company “Alphabet”. They’ve almost got at least 1 company with each letter from the Alphabet!

Similarly, Meta (formerly Facebook’s parent company) owns:

• Facebook
• Instagram
• Whatsapp
• And dozens of other companies.

I’m confident you use half of these every single day! And both of these giants have been fined millions, multiple times for the breach of privacy.

Hence, you need alternatives, at least for those major platforms which you use more frequently, or are confidential.

Here are a few services you can use:

• BitChute (Video streaming): Unlike Youtube, BitChute doesn’t censor what’s posted on the platform. One of its primary goals is “freedom of expression”, something that you wouldn’t find very often on those other media giants. You can upload your own videos, or watch videos posted by others without fearing a govt. strike.
• Telegram/ Signal: These are instant messengers, just like Whatsapp. Telegram even offers more features than Whatsapp. They’re End-to-End encrypted and more secure than whatever you’re currently using.
• Skiff mail / Protonmail: These are E2E encrypted e-mail services. Protonmail doesn’t collect your IP address and even has its own VPN service!
• Mastodon: This is a community-owned, ad-free Twitter alternative. It respects free speech and lets you post whatever you want.

If I’ve to sum this piece up, I’ll say start with a VPN. It’s the best, easiest and yet one of the most effective ways to bypass censorship online.

If you get a good VPN, you wouldn’t need the proxy, or Tor. However, if you only get a Proxy or Tor, I’d still highly recommend getting the VPN as they’re not as safe as they should be.

In other words, the VPN gives you unrestricted access + safety (you can’t be traced). The other alternatives only offer the unrestricted access.

This is why you need a browser which respects your privacy.  Brave is a 100% free browser that makes this possible. It looks and feels exactly like Google Chrome, minus all its trackers and other intrusions.

In fact, Brave even has in-built ad-blockers that make Youtube a completely different experience.

Tor Browser

Tor is another browser you shouldn’t ignore if you’re searching for online anonymity apps.

It’s popular mostly as a “dark web browser” or “onion network browser”. However, it totally can be used to browse the normal web as well.

Do note that Tor resembles a VPN in some regards. Tor hides your IP address from your ISP and the govt. as well. It does this by routing your connection via various volunteer nodes before spitting your request out to your target website.

There’s no history, no cookies, no fingerprinting not even screen-size. Yes, Tor uses a different screen-size on the browser making sure your real screen-size isn’t shared.

Now, Tor isn’t meant for normal browsing. As a result, you may loose images, animations and a few other things when browsing. However, it definitely can be used to browse normal websites. In fact, it’s one of the most anonymous ways to do so.

Anonymous e-mail

What’s one of the most  common things you do online? Send/receive emails, don’t you?

Did you know your emails aren’t private? Some of the biggest e-mail providers have accepted being able to “read” user e-mails. Yes, “read”, without your consent.

Even when they can’t read it, these providers still log and share your IP address, name and other such private details with govt. agencies when forced to do so.

This is why you need an encrypted and anonymous e-mail provider.

Skiff is an End-to-End encrypted e-mail provider. E2E means no third-party, not even  the company can read your emails. It’s not just a “choice”, but a technical impossibility for any third-party to read your e-mails.

Now, most instant messaging apps you use are probably “end to end encrypted”, such as Whatsapp. However, they aren’t “anonymous”. Meaning, you’re required to share your personal details to use the service.

This means, while the contents of your messages are secure, your identity still isn’t. This is where you need an anonymous instant messaging app.

There are multiple options you can go with. However, I’d recommend going with Signal if you need an online anonymity app for instant messaging.

It offers all the features that Whatsapp does, without all the trackers/links to your social media accounts.

You can send messages, enjoy video calls, create and chat in groups and much more.  All of this is E2E encrypted, and completely free. Signal is a non-profit and open-source.

Moreover, the app is even recommended by Edward Snowden, Elon Musk and even the founder of Twitter- Jack Dorsey.

You can also go with Telegram. This is something else that’ll let you chat with complete anonymity, E2E encrypted, and is free.  On Telegram, you can add friends and talk to them without even sharing your number.

If you’d rather be 100% anonymous and sign up without a number, you can look at Ricochet. It’s computer-based instant messaging app that’s extremely advanced and completely anonymous. No numbers, signups or any other personal details are required.

Online anonymous cloud storage

What’s the cloud storage app you use? It’s probably Google Drive or Dropbox or something similar, isn’t it? Google Drive is owned by Google, one of the most controversial tech-giants on the planet. Dropbox was slammed by Snowden for bad privacy.

You need something that’s anonymous and doesn’t have access to your data (E2E encrypted).

Anonymous search engines

Finally, we all use search engines to search for almost everything on the Internet, don’t we?

Now, if you’re using a VPN and an anonymous browser, you’ve half won this battle. However, to win the war, you must switch to an anonymous search engine.

Basically any search engine that doesn’t care who you are, what you search for, which links you click on or anything else you do.

Now, there are a few of those. However, only one comes close to a site index as good as Google- Duck Duck Go.

Yacy is another privacy-respecting search engine worth a peek. It’s a bit more advanced than traditional search engines. It’s decentralized, and lets you “make your own search engine”, you heard that right.

This search engine doesn’t track you or your browsing habits. It’s truly anonymous and has a massive link index. It even blocks ads.

Online Anonymity apps- Closing words

So, which are the best online anonymity apps? I’ll say all of these.

If you notice, I’ve curated this list based on “purpose”. So, there’s the VPN for IP-masking, Brave for anonymous browsing, Skiff and Proton for anonymous e-mails and so on.

Of course, you can find alternatives to everything I’ve mentioned on this list. However, all the mentions here are based on my personal experience and use. Moreover, these are mostly free and hence going with them would still save you some time.

If it’s too much for you, I’ll suggest get just the VPN. That’s one of the strongest (and easiest) anonymity steps you can take. However, if you opt for multiple of these anonymity apps, I guarantee you’ll be untraceable on the web.

End to End Encrypted

You wouldn’t be reading this Skiff review if it wasn’t End-to-End encrypted.

It basically means that only the sender and the receiver of the e-mails have access  to your mails.

No one else can intercept or decrypt the mails mid-way, and this includes the Skiff team.

In other words, even if Skiff is forced by some government agency to share your e-mails, they can’t. The company has absolutely no access to your account, period.

Account recovery key

I just said the company can’t access your account. How then can you recover your account in case you lose it?

Well, there are two ways to get that done.

First, you can set a recovery e-mail. This works just like any other recovery e-mail. You can initiate a “Forgot password” session, a link is sent to this e-mail and you get your account back.

The second option is even more private.

When you sign up at Skiff, you get a “recovery code”. This is like your master password. A series of jumbled characters. Skiff makes it mandatory to “save it as PDF” when it’s first shown, as it’s never shown again.

You can use this to recover your account even if you do not have your password.

In-built Productivity & collaboration suite

 

I’m sure you’ve heard of at least a few other E2E encrypted e-mail providers before . However, have you heard of an e-mail provider that also doubles as a “productivity suite”? You probably haven’t!

Skiff has this feature called “Skiff Pages”.

It’s basically Google Doc, but a lot more advanced and “End to End encrypted”.

This again means no one else except the people you exclusively share the doc with, have access to it.

It’s basically a document editing tool. It offers dozens of pre-designed templates you can work with. These templates are built keeping different industries and scenarios in mind giving you a much better pick.

 

It even has a “version history” feature so you can track any and all changes made to the page.

You can  even import your documents directly from Google Drive. In fact, importing directly from Drives gives you $15 credit. Obviously, you can also import files from your local storage.

You can also invite your teammates to work on it with you, in real-time. And yes, this too is End to End encrypted.

Sharing and viewing features too are impressive. You can either make these pages public, so anyone with the link can view them. Or, you can make it private, so that only those with a Skiff account and your link get viewing rights.

When sharing links, you can also choose either to offer or revoke “editing” rights.

You can even set “passwords” so that only those with a password can view it. There’s this unique feature that lets you add “watermarks”. These are the normal watermarks that cover the entire page in the background and are often used for drafts.

2 Factor Authentication

Skiff lets you add 2-FA for added security as well.

You can use Google Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile, or basically any other 2-FA app to set it up.

This would ensure that even if your password is compromised, your account remains inaccessible to a third-party.

Metamask Logins

I’m a major Crypto enthusiast. With Crypto, comes anonymity. Skiff lets you login using Metamask wallets if you own them.

All you need to do is have the Metamask browser extension installed on your browser. Skiff then automatically shows you the “login using Metamask” option on the login page.

Aliases

There are times when you may not want to share your actual e-mail with the other party.

Skiff offers “aliases” exactly for these situations. These aliases are basically a new e-mail ID attached to the same account. No additional signups required.

Anonymity

Skiff is officially semi-anonymous, however, it totally can be made completely and fully anonymous as well.

It’s semi-anonymous as it doesn’t require any personal data/identification/verification when you sign up.

To make it completely anonymous, all you have to do is use a VPN. The VPN will mask your IP address making sure there’s no way any of your Skiff activity can be linked to you. Your mails are already encrypted and can’t be accessed by any third-party.

Open Source

This is one of the biggest trust-factors you should be looking for when entrusting something with your privacy.

Skiff is open source. This means, its code is available publicly and can be audited by any individual/group. It also means the company is offering what it “claims” to offer. There are no lies, backdoors, or hidden technicalities which may jeopardize your privacy.

Modern Interface & search features

Most email providers claiming to be anonymous, encrypted or decentralized miss out on one big aspect, the UI! I get it, their “features” are supposed to be the USP.

However, Skiff is built different. On top of everything else it’s offering, it also offers one of the best user-interfaces even when compared to popular providers such as Gmail.

Easy, simple, and clean, wouldn’t you agree? All the options are laid out neat and you don’t have to hunt for specific options/features.

It also offers advanced, in-content search for free. Despite being E2E encrypted, it uses client-side encryption to let you search the “content” inside e-mails. This makes searches a lot faster and smoother without compromising your privacy. (Yes, even on the free plan).

Folders & Labels

Okay, this isn’t a “massive feature”. Yet, not all encrypted mail providers offer this and hence I just have to mention it on this Skiff review.

Skiff lets you add colour-coded folders and labels. You can easily move mails to these folders and label for better organization!

Schedule mails & signatures

This is another feature that’s not massive and yet deserves a mention. Skiff lets you “schedule” your e-mails.

This lets you send e-mails in your sleep, literally. It’s available for all Skiff users, even the free accounts without any additional payments.

Native Mobile and Desktop apps

Skiff can be used without any additional downloads, directly from your browsers.

However, it does have native apps for all the major platforms, including:

The only limitations on the free plan? You get “24 hour version history” on Skiff Pages instead of “unlimited” on the paid plan. Similarly, the free plan gives you 10 GB instead of 100 GB on the paid plan.

If you do go for the paid plan, it costs just $8.00/month which I believe is still pretty impressive.

Support

Does Skiff offer support? It does, via e-mail. I’d generally complain about the lack of a “live chat” feature, but, not on this Skiff review.

That’s primarily because for all these features and privacy that Skiff is offering for free, I believe e-mail support is more than enough.

Additionally, the application is so simple and easy to understand that you probably wouldn’t even need support in most cases. I’ve been using Skiff for a few months and never once I had to send an e-mail asking for help.

 Skiff review- Final verdict

So, is Skiff the best anonymous, end to end encrypted, decentralized and open-source email platform in the industry? I’d say that’s a possibility.

It offers everything you could ask for from one such platform. Moreover, being open-source means it can never lie about its policies and technicalities.

To top it all up, it’s 100% free. I don’t see red flags so far, do you? I think it’s best if you go and give it a try. A first-hand experience will help you understand the platform a lot better than this Skiff review, wouldn’t it?

This is “the best” VPN out there in my personal experience. I’ve probably used over 30 VPNs in the past decade, however, Nord clearly wins on multiple fronts. Let me walk the talk?

I personally consider TorGuard to be an underdog. For some reason, this massively impressive VPN doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

As for devices, can be used on Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS as well as Android.  It lets you virtually switch your location to over 50 countries.

With its 3000+ servers, speed isn’t an issue either. Additionally, there’s the WireGuard protocol further boosting the speed.

It’s does offer paid Dedicated IPs on the cheaper plans, and for free on the more expensive packages.

It also has a “Stealth” VPN feature that lets you bypass heavier restrictions.  Obviously, there’s no restriction on speed or bandwidth.

Split Tunnelling too is available, letting you choose which devices/apps will use or not use the VPN. Obfuscated servers are available and used to mask your use of a VPN.

Unfortunately, dedicated IPs aren’t available. This is one of the reasons why I didn’t list it higher up on this list.
